July Fourth Mentions Grow Over Past Decade On Television News

How has the Fourth of July been covered in the news? The timeline below shows monthly mentions across CNN, MSNBC and Fox News since 2009, showing relatively stable mentions through 2014, at which point it began growing other than 2016 and 2018. Mentions have been almost three times as high in recent years as they were a decade ago.

Looking at Google Trends since 2004, mentions pick up a bit earlier than television news, in 2012 and remained similar elevated, though without the 2016 and 2018 dips and with much sharper declines in 2020 and 2021, reflecting pandemic-era restrictions and cancelations.

Looking at online news coverage since 2017, we can see an annual rise that typically begins in late April / early May and declines through early September each year.
