Ukraine's Counteroffensive Isn't Leading To A Surge In Media Coverage

The timeline below shows spoken mentions of Ukraine, including the ramping buildup and then how quickly the media pivoted away from Ukraine last year, but also the steady state low-bore coverage and ups and downs. Every day the invasion receives a few dozen to a hundred or more mentions across each channel, but interestingly, the counteroffensive has not led to a sustained rise in spoken mentions.

Unsurprisingly, BBC News has mentioned it the most and Fox News the least.

Onscreen textual mentions show a similar pattern, but here it is CNN that kept an elevated focus on it longer than its peers and has consistently mentioned it more. Both BBC News and CNN have provided elevated coverage since late May, while Fox News and MSNBC did not increase their coverage.

Indeed, CNN leads onscreen textual mentions, with Fox News again last.

Worldwide online news coverage also continues to decline. Notably, there is no measurable increase in mentions during the counteroffensive. In fact, it isn't even visible in the timeline below.
