Visual Explorer: Vastly Improved Russia Today Transcripts Through GCP's Chirp Model

To help researchers and journalists examining Russian propaganda and narratives around the invasion of Ukraine, we are launching vastly improved transcription of Russia Today broadcasts over the coming 24 hours. Historically we have relied on ASR transcripts generated by a third party, but we are now switching over to Google's Chirp model, which provides immensely improved transcription of proper names and overall quality. At this time, the transcripts will apply only moving forward, but over time we will be replacing the historical transcripts with improved Chirp versions. Note that currently the TV Explorer will still rely on the older ASR transcripts while we work on upgrading its workflows, so the newer transcripts will only be available in the Visual Explorer for the time being.
