Just under a decade ago we submitted a proposal to US public health authorities to create "A Realtime Global Biosurveillance Platform for Mapping, Forecasting, Network Assessment and Community Outreach for Infectious Disease." Unfortunately, that proposed biosurveillance platform was ultimately dismissed by US Government reviewers who argued that focusing exclusively on a small number of Western English language sources, human-driven legacy tools and Twitter scraping was all that was needed to forecast every future disease outbreak. Ironically, just a few years later GDELT was used with the exact model we proposed to provide one of the earliest alerts of the impending COVID19 outbreak. All of our infographic experiments over the past week got us thinking, what would it look like to visualize a highly technical proposal like this and transform it into something visually compelling and instantly understandable that might have helped us sway those reviewers? The results of this initial test were so stunning that we started asking what would it look like to go back and make infographics for a number of proposals we've submitted to various organizations over the years.
