Three of the most popular terms of the last few years for referring to false information have been "misinformation" (typically defined as incorrect information), "disinformation" (typically defined as purposely false information dissiminated to negatively impact an entity) and "fake news" (a colloquial umbrella term). The timeline shows that all three burst into the media lexicon in the aftermath of Donald Trump's surprise 2016 win, with "fake news" originally the term of choice, but its use has faded linearly over the past four years and has now been superseded by the other two, with "disinformation" gaining on simple "misinformation".
