Lee Giles of the Department of Information Sciences and Technology, at Pennsylvania State University, published "Storybase: Towards Building a Knowledge Base for News Events" in the Proceedings of The 53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics and The 7th International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (ACL-IJCNLP 2015). Their system uses GDELT as a source of news coverage of major events.
