Earlier this week we showcased how accurately Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking was able to segment American television evening news broadcasts into their underlying stories, creating an index of the major stories in each broadcast. This time we go a step further, using a new workflow that first segments the transcript into sentences and then asks Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking to not only make a list of the stories in the broadcast, but to provide a list of the sentences that are part of each story. Using this sentence list we're able to then post-process the Gemini results and provide a list of all of the segments in the broadcast where the story is discussed. Remarkably, Gemini does a superb job of tracking stories across each broadcast, even those that are mentioned multiple times, such as an intro teaser, the main story and then an outro recap – Gemini correctly identifies all three as part of the same underlying story. Incredibly, the results below semantically cluster each broadcast far more accurately than any previous semantic, embedding-based or other clustering model we've tested, presenting Gemini as a form of exceptionally powerful clustering model for highly multitopic texts. Below we run our new Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking workflow across the same week of five evening news broadcasts as before, but this time include below each story a list of the clips where it is mentioned in the broadcast.
NOTE that because broadcast news closed captioning is typically typed live by human beings, the captioning transcript typically lags the actual spoken words by around 5-10 seconds, so the clips below will typically start up to 10 seconds before the actual story begins. Ultimately we will fix this by combining the captioning with our ASR transcripts to generate precise subsecond timestamps for each clip.

---------------------- STORYID: TITLE: DESCRIPTION: President Trump initiates diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, holding phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. These talks mark a significant shift in U.S. policy, which previously avoided direct engagement with Putin regarding the conflict. The discussions include agreements to begin negotiations and a potential in-person meeting between Trump and Putin. The new U.S. stance suggests Ukraine might need to cede territory and that NATO membership is unlikely post-war, raising concerns among Democrats and putting pressure on Zelenskyy. His release came in exchange for the U.S. freeing a Russian cybercriminal. While the release occurred on the heels of President Trump's call with Vladimir Putin, Trump denies that Fogel's release was part of the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. A significant blast of snow is expected from the Central U.S. to the Northeast, with Chicago anticipating up to half a foot. Heavy rain is falling in the South, posing a threat of tornadoes in areas like Montgomery, Alabama, and New Orleans. Additionally, Southern California faces a high risk of flash flooding and mudslides due to forecasted heavy rainfall on fire-scarred land. Eggs, in particular, are scarce and leading the rise in grocery prices. The shortage is exacerbated by bird flu, which has led to the culling of tens of millions of chickens. Commercial farms face significant delays in replenishing supply, as new chicks take up to eight months to start laying eggs, indicating that the egg shortage will persist for many months even if the avian flu is eliminated. CLIPS: CLIP: 372.329 -> 562.178 (181.85s): https://archive.org/details/KPIX_20250213_000000_CBS_Evening_News/start/372.329/end/562.178 ---------------------- STORYID: TITLE: DESCRIPTION: The 2009 Colgan Air Flight 3407 crash near Buffalo, which killed 50 people, served as a turning point in American aviation safety. Investigations revealed pilot error, and in response, the victims' families successfully lobbied for the federal Airline Safety Bill. This legislation mandated 1500 hours of flight training for copilots, established a pilot performance database, and required pilots to have ten hours of rest before flying. Despite regional airlines' current attempts to roll back these training requirements, the families continue to advocate for the regulations, emphasizing that their collective action has been crucial in maintaining U.S. air travel safety, especially in light of a recent mid-air collision that ended a nearly 16-year safety streak. These officials, responsible for rooting out misconduct and ensuring public safety in areas like veterans' healthcare, food safety, and highways, are suing to regain their positions, alleging political motivation behind their dismissals. Critics argue this move threatens the independence of oversight bodies and could compromise public safety, while the administration defends it by claiming the fired inspectors failed to perform their duties. The controversy extends to the stripping of security clearances for those representing whistle-blowers, raising concerns about governmental transparency and accountability. When the AP refused to adopt the new name, citing its global news agency status and the need for internationally recognized place names, an AP reporter was barred from an Oval Office event. ---------------------- STORYID: 1 TITLE: Trump's Ukraine Peace Plan and International Reactions DESCRIPTION: President Trump is pursuing a peace plan for the nearly 3-year-old war in Ukraine, proposing U.S. and Russian officials meet in Munich with Ukraine invited. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's spokesperson states Ukraine does not expect talks with Russia now and requires a common position with the U.S. and Europe first. Critics draw parallels to the 1938 Munich appeasement of Hitler, fearing Trump's potential concessions to Putin. Ukrainian leaders express concern over being excluded from peace talks, feeling a sense of betrayal. Moscow, however, is gleeful about the prospect of talks. Meanwhile, the war continues to rage, with a recent attack on Kramatorsk causing casualties. The long-term impact of the war on Ukraine is highlighted, with physical recovery possible but internal wounds lasting. White House sources indicate Trump's approach to foreign policy norms is "out the window," suggesting any deal will likely be between Trump and Putin directly, not necessarily what Zelenskyy desires. Adams had been indicted for bribery, fraud, and soliciting contributions from foreign nationals. The former head prosecutor alleges a quid pro quo, suggesting Mayor Adams implied he wouldn't cooperate with the Trump administration unless charges were dropped. The acting Deputy Attorney General, Emil Bove, close to President Trump, is described as trying to root out "unhelpful prosecutors" and has denied the quid pro quo claim, stating he will investigate those who resigned. This plan aims to incentivize domestic manufacturing. A Pittsburgh manufacturer, Accu Tracks Products, sees both potential benefits (increased demand for local sourcing) and challenges (higher costs due to tariffs on key imported materials like aluminum). Historically, similar tariffs have led to higher prices for consumers and a decrease in hiring in the manufacturing industry. The overall economic impact of the new tariff plan remains uncertain and dependent on various factors. Kennedy Jr. has been sworn in as Secretary of Health and Human Services following a 52-48 Senate confirmation vote, with former Republican leader Mitch McConnell notably voting no. Kennedy will oversee key health agencies like the FDA, NIH, and CDC. His confirmation is largely attributed to the "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) movement, an unlikely coalition of parents focused on healthy food, environmental toxins, and chronic diseases. While Kennedy has pledged to address these issues, he has also repeated the debunked claim that autism comes from vaccines. After the election, they reconvene, revealing continued stark disagreements on President Trump's return to the White House and the future of democracy. While their differences remain, their shared experience on the river fostered a metaphor for needing to "row down this river together" as Americans, emphasizing that while rafting didn't erase their differences, it encouraged a deeper connection. The mural, depicting muffins and doughnuts, was painted by a high school art teacher. However, the town views it as an advertising sign, not a mural, because it depicts bakery products. As a sign, it is four times larger than allowed and the town demands its removal. Leavitt's Bakery has sued in federal court, arguing that the town's restriction on the mural's content violates the baker's freedom of speech, turning it into a civil rights case.
