Last week we demonstrated a major leap in our ability to automatically segment television evening news broadcasts into their underlying stories by annotating rather than indexing. Naturally, we received a lot of interest in how robust these findings were, whether we could achieve similar accuracy when run over a larger sample and, most importantly, how they compare with human segmentation of those broadcasts. To answer these questions, we examined an entire week of CBS Evening News broadcasts from this past February, segmenting them through Gemini 2.5 Pro, Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking and Gemini 2.5 Flash Non-Thinking models and comparing their results to Vanderbilt Television News Archive's hand-compiled story segmentation for each broadcast. Across the five days examined here, all three Gemini models perfectly matched the Vanderbilt human segmentation, capturing every single story identified by the human annotator and in several cases took major stories that were lumped under roundup segments and made them their own entries for additional analytic clarity. Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking produced nearly identical results on all five broadcasts with accurate segmentations and transcript annotations, while Gemini 2.5 Flash Non-Thinking yielded nearly identical segmentation, but encountered greater challenges in transcript annotation. Overall, Gemini Thinking models were able to achieve human-level story segmentation on this sample week of evening news broadcasts.
Let's start with the February 10th, 2025 CBS Evening News broadcast. You can compare the results below with the Vanderbilt Television News Archive's hand-compiled story segmentation for this broadcast.
We use the following prompt:
Below is a television news transcript. You are a news cataloger whose job it is to read television news transcripts and identify each of the stories described within. Read the transcript below and make a list of all of the stories it describes. Each story may be mentioned multiple times in multiple places in the transcript. Number the stories in sequential order from 1. Output the story list as JSON records, one per row, with fields STORYID, TITLE and DESCRIPTION and a field TYPE that is "STORY". Then go through the transcript below and break it into chunks relating to each story and output each chunk as a JSON record, one per row, that has fields STORYID and TXT and TYPE="CHUNK" to create an annotated version of the transcript and fill in the STORYID with the story number for that story.
TELEVISION NEWS TRANSCRIPT:
Gemini 2.5 Pro (06-05) matches Vanderbilt's human segmentation exactly other than the first story on pain relief exercises which is due to an earlier broadcast bleeding into the first few minutes of the broadcast in the Internet Archive's version (this could be removed by adding additional instruction to Gemini to ignore preceding programming):
{"STORYID": 1, "TITLE": "Simple Exercises for Pain Relief", "DESCRIPTION": "A segment demonstrating four simple exercises to alleviate common pains. Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking Mode (05-20) also matches the Vanderbilt segmentation exactly except for the addition of an additional story in which it breaks a brief preview clip of a story airing the following day into its own story listing:
{"STORYID": 1, "TITLE": "Trump Administration's \"DOGE\" Initiative and Elon Musk's Federal Audit", "DESCRIPTION": "President Trump's second term begins with a new CBS News poll showing 53% approval. The report highlights the unprecedented use of C-17 military aircraft for deportations to Ecuador and Guatemala, with single flights costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, significantly more than commercial charter flights. Gemini 2.5 Flash Non-Thinking Mode (05-20) also matches the Vanderbilt segmentation exactly except for breaking the complete list of previewed stories into their own story element:
{"STORYID": 1, "TITLE": "Trump Administration's Audit of Federal Agencies by Elon Musk's DOGE", "DESCRIPTION": "President Trump has appointed Elon Musk to lead a temporary White House initiative, the Department of Government Operations (DOGE), with the ambitious goal of auditing federal government agencies to expose waste, fraud, and abuse. Concerns have been raised about data security and transparency, as well as the legality of Musk's team accessing such sensitive information without proper cybersecurity protocols. Questions also remain about the efficacy and evidence of the fraud and waste claims.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 2, "TITLE": "President Trump's Global Trade War and Import Taxes", "DESCRIPTION": "President Trump is escalating his global trade war by imposing a 25% import tax on steel and aluminum. This decision aligns with previous discussions, including one 17 years ago on '60 Minutes' that highlighted the potential inflationary downside of scrapping lower denominations. Currently, it costs over $0.03 to manufacture a penny and nearly $0.14 for a nickel, resulting in a government loss of $103 million last year. The legality of this order by presidential decree is in question, as Congress typically sets currency specifications. Lobbying efforts from zinc manufacturers and public sentiment regarding nostalgia and potential price rounding are also factors.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 5, "TITLE": "Winter Storms Across the Midwest and East", "DESCRIPTION": "The Midwest and East Coast are experiencing back-to-back winter storms. The first storm, originating out West and tapping into Gulf moisture, will bring snow to the Northeast, with some Southern areas receiving higher accumulations. A second, more significant storm is expected Wednesday night into Thursday, following a similar path but with much more moisture, potentially causing heavy snowfall in Chicago and significant rain in areas still recovering from Hurricane Helene, like North Carolina and the Tennessee Valley.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 6, "TITLE": "The Cost of Deporting Immigrants Using Military Jets", "DESCRIPTION": "The Trump administration is utilizing military transport jets, specifically C17s, to deport immigrants who are in the country illegally. This unprecedented move is significantly more expensive than standard charter flights, with a single C17 flight costing over $28,000 per hour, more than triple the average cost for regular passenger aircraft. Examples include a nearly $300,000 flight to Guatemala and round-trip costs exceeding $1 million for flights to India. The U.S. military is also expanding a migrant operation center at Guantanamo Bay to hold up to 30,000 people, with initial flights having a very high per-person cost. While expensive, the administration justifies these costs by weighing them against the expense of housing and feeding migrants within the U.S. There are questions about whether this process could be done more cost-effectively and the deterrent message it sends compared to previous administrations.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 7, "TITLE": "Inflation's Impact on Connell, Washington, and the Potato Industry", "DESCRIPTION": "The town of Connell, Washington, heavily dependent on a potato processing plant, has been severely impacted by inflation. The plant, which processed 300 million pounds of potatoes annually, laid off all its workers due to a national decrease in fast-food visits and subsequent drop in French fry sales, attributed to inflation. This closure has devastated the local economy, leading to job losses, a 10% cut in the town's budget due to lost tax revenue, and a significant decline in sales for local businesses like pizza restaurants and coffee shops. Residents feel worse off due to persistently high prices, and the town is struggling to find new ways to restore prosperity.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 8, "TITLE": "Future Stories: AI Dangers, Measles Comeback, and Port Security", "DESCRIPTION": "Upcoming segments on CBS Evening News Plus will explore the dangers of artificial intelligence and its potential to outsmart humans. Another story will address the comeback of measles and interview parents who opt out of vaccinating their children. Additionally, a segment on Eye on America will investigate a security threat at U.S. ports, specifically questioning if the country that manufactures giant cranes is using them for espionage.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 9, "TITLE": "Expansion of CBS Evening News and Launch of CBS Evening News Plus", "DESCRIPTION": "The CBS Evening News, a pioneer in electronic journalism since 1963 when it expanded to a half-hour, is now launching a new chapter. It will include a second half-hour program called CBS Evening News Plus, an extra 30 minutes designed to provide news in context. This new segment will stream on CBS Evening News 24/7, continuing its pioneering role in news programming.", "TYPE": "STORY"}
Next we'll examine the February 11th, 2025 CBS Evening News broadcast. You can compare the results below with the Vanderbilt Television News Archive's hand-compiled story segmentation for this broadcast.
Gemini 2.5 Pro (06-05) matches Vanderbilt's human segmentation exactly for the major stories, but actually goes further and instead of lumping Marc Fogel and Elon Musk's DOGE efforts into a single roundup story, it breaks them into two separate stories. Similarly, while Vanderbilt's summary makes no mention at all about avian flu, Gemini's summary notes that this forms a major story in the broadcast. The foaming soap story is again an example of the earlier broadcast bleeding into the first few minutes of the Archive's version of the broadcast:
{"STORYID": 1, "TITLE": "DIY Foaming Soap", "DESCRIPTION": "A short segment demonstrates how to make foaming hand soap at home using a special dispenser, water, and liquid soap, which is presented as a cost-saving measure.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 2, "TITLE": "US Post-Pandemic Educational Crisis", "DESCRIPTION": "A troubling report reveals that five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, American students are still significantly behind in reading and math. Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking Mode (05-20) also matches the Vanderbilt segmentation and exactly matches Gemini Pro's segmentation:

The first time we ran Gemini 2.5 Flash Non-Thinking Mode (05-20) failed to properly segment the transcript into stories. Run a second time, it closely matches the Vanderbilt and Gemini Thinking segmentations, but failed to properly annotate the transcript itself:

Next we'll examine the February 12th, 2025 CBS Evening News broadcast. You can compare the results below with the Vanderbilt Television News Archive's hand-compiled story segmentation for this broadcast.
Gemini 2.5 Pro (06-05) opens as usual with the tail end of the previous broadcast. As with the previous broadcast, it breaks out the Guantanamo Bay story into its own story, whereas Vanderbilt lumps under the "Snow Blast Expected Across US" roundup. Whereas Vanderbilt breaks the two national weather stories into separate segments, Gemini recognizes that they are covering the same broad stories and thus groups them together:
{"STORYID": 1, "TITLE": "Lifestyle Tip: How to Fold a Jacket for Travel", "DESCRIPTION": "A demonstration is given on how to fold a structured jacket to fit compactly into a suitcase without wrinkling, allowing for easier travel.", "TYPE": "STORY"} {"STORYID": 2, "TITLE": "President Trump Initiates Negotiations to End Ukraine War", "DESCRIPTION": "President Trump holds phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to start negotiations to end the war.
