Yesterday we demonstrated a major leap forward in our efforts to apply at-scale story segmentation to television news: changing from indexing to annotation yielded the first-ever accurate segmentation of a television news transcript in our years of testing. That segmentation used GCP's most powerful and capable reasoning model, Gemini 2.5 Pro. To apply this segmentation workflow across the entire TV News Archive using Gemini 2.5 Pro would likely be resource and cost prohibitive, raising the question of how the smaller Gemini and Gemma models compare at the same segmentation task. Comparing Gemini 2.5 Pro Thinking, Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking, Gemini 2.5 Flash with Thinking disabled, Gemini 2.0 Flash, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Light and Gemma 3 27B, we find that Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash Thinking yield similar results, with non-thinking Flash yielding the same major stories and a few less shorter stories. Gemini 2.0 Flash required two runs to yield a transcript that didn't terminate midway through, while Gemini 2.0 Flash-Light and Gemma 3 27B were unable to produce complete transcripts despite multiple runs and Gemma 3 additionally hallucinated an entire passage. As seen in the table below, Gemini 2.5 Pro Thinking would cost $760K to run over the entire TV News Archive, while Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking that yields highly similar results would cost just $158K and Gemini 2.5 Flash Non-Thinking would reduce the cost down to just $32K, demonstrating the considerable cost savings of these smaller models.
