Mortgage Mentions Rising On Business TV News Channels But At Historic Lows On General News Channels

Even as rising mortgage rates raise affordability concerns, they aren't attracting outsized media attention. The timeline below shows total monthly mentions of the word "mortgage(s)" across CNN, MSNBC and Fox News over the past decade, showing a rise since March 2022's lowpoint, but that they are still substantially off their recent highs. Compared to a decade ago, since 2019 there has been enormous stratification, with MSNBC mentioning mortgages far less than its peers and Fox News being the first to pivot towards the topic and covering it for longer and more intensely than CNN.

Business channels have been ramping up their coverage since the end of last year, though Bloomberg remains behind its peers and Fox News was the first to pivot to the topic from 2019-2020.
