In November 2016, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. The following month, Facebook launched a new partnership with news and fact-checking organizations to monitor and flag falsehoods on its platform. By June 2017, Facebook was paying several of those fact checkers for their services. In the half-decade since, the fact-checking industry has grown dramatically across the world. Considering two of the largest U.S.-based fact checkers that have received at least some support from Facebook – PolitiFact and Snopes – did Trump’s election or Facebook’s new partnership lead to a noticeable increase in fact-checking activity?
