Using Embedding Ranking To Sort Generative Summaries By "Quality"

Earlier today we demonstrated how scoring LLM-based generative summaries by embedding-based similarity ranking to the original source material can filter out hallucinations and truncations, surfacing the "highest quality" summaries. In that particular example, many of the LLM-generated summaries featured substantial hallucination, necessitating the use of postprocessing filtering to remove them. But, what about the more general case of relatively faithful summarization in which there is no major hallucination, but there is still a desire to sort the generated summaries by "quality"? To explore this further, we'll use ChatGPT to generate 12 summaries of a portion of a CSPAN broadcast (6 large and 6 small summaries) and rank them via each of our embedding models.

For our analysis, we'll use the first six minutes of this agriculture hearing via CSPAN:

LLMs are highly unpredictable, outputting a wide range of summaries and levels of detail with few means of constraining or controlling their outputs beyond inference parameters and prompts that do not always have the intended effect on their results. The workflow here successfully stratifies these results, sifting the summaries that provide the most detail and are the most faithful to the original text to the top, while scoring the lowest-similarity results to the bottom.

Putting this all together, the same embedding-based filtering that works for eliminating hallucinated and truncated summaries also works for cases where all the generated summaries are faithful to identify the "highest quality" summaries from the list. For any passage, the LLM can simply be instructed to generate multiple summaries and the workflow here used to surface the "best" out of the results.
