We've demonstrated that input chunk size appears to have only a minimal impact on story segmentation, with larger chunk sizes often yielding finer-grained stories, but with much greater inconsistency (the number of stories varies considerably from run to run). What about the impact of chunk size on token counts and the richness and detail of the computed indexing metadata? How much of an impact does chunk size have on input, output and thinking token counts and the level of detail in key fields like framing and narrative structure?
The end result is that larger chunk sizes predictably yield progressively smaller input token counts due to the reduction in the number of encapsulating JSON blocks required. This yields reduced inference costs. Thinking token counts are highly unpredictable, varying wildly between runs, from 2238 to 13,395, reflecting the difficulty of estimating the inference cost of thinking models. Strangely, however, output tokens drop with increased chunk length. Why would the output length decrease as input chunk size increases? We asked Gemini itself to analyze the output from the 2-second and sentence-level chunking and the result matched our own assessment: the level of detail decreases considerably as chunk size increases. In simple terms: when a broadcast is divided into 2 second chunks, Gemini returns far richer metadata, including much more detailed narrative assessment and more locations and entities. Gemini also returns all output in English. In contrast, when the broadcast is divided into sentence-level chunks (using the ASR model's punctuation), the richness and detail of its output drops substantially, with far less detail and fewer identified locations and entities. Coherence also drops, with the model more consistently returning portions of its output in Russian instead of English. Thus, despite costing more in terms of input and output tokens, the 2-second chunking seems to yield the highest quality results.

Let's ask Gemini to compare the original 2 second segmentation with the sentence-level segmentation:
————–
Story Titles – Scope and Language
Version 1 titles are longer, more descriptive, and often include specific place names ("Petrovka and Voskresenka in Donetsk People’s Republic Amidst Intense Fighting").
Version 2 titles are shorter and more generalized ("Russian Forces Liberate Settlements in DPR, Advance on Front Lines").
————–
Story Content and Detail Level
Version 1 gives more detailed descriptions:
Lists more locations with precise coordinates.
Mentions additional entities (organizations, people) and events.
Contains emotions, framing, and narrative structure that are more elaborate.
Version 1's descriptions are more comprehensive. For example, in Story 1 (Military), it not only mentions the liberation of settlements but also adds specific strategic context: "…approaching Mirnograd, which, if successful, would significantly worsen the position of Ukrainian forces in Donbas."
Version 2 descriptions are condensed:
Fewer named locations (some coordinates differ slightly).
Some battles, places, and secondary details are omitted.
Focus is tighter on the main storyline.
Version 2's descriptions are more like concise summaries. They capture the essence of the story but with less of the specific nuance and forward-looking analysis present in Version 1.
————–
Keyword Sets
V1 keyword lists are longer, containing more thematic and political terms (e.g., "Neofascists," "Central Group of Forces," "strategic objective").
V2 keyword lists are shorter and more neutral in terminology, with some politically charged terms removed.
————–
Entity Lists
Version 1 lists more named individuals, organizations, and groups for each story. It generally provides a longer and more exhaustive list of keywords for each story.
Version 2 often omits secondary names and keeps only the most relevant ones.
————–
Emotions, Framing, and Narrative
In Version 1, the "Emotions" and "Framing" fields are more expressive and multi-faceted, sometimes including ideological tone (e.g., pro-Russian framing, triumphalism).
In Version 2, emotions are fewer in number and more general; framing tends to be shorter and less overtly political.
Overall, the analysis in Version 1 is more verbose and detailed. It breaks down the narrative flow into more specific steps and provides a slightly more nuanced interpretation of the media framing. Version 2's analysis is accurate but more succinct.
————–
Overall Style
Version 1 = More comprehensive, detailed, and politically framed; greater narrative depth; stronger emotional tone; fuller entity/location coverage.
Version 2 = Condensed, simplified, and more neutral in tone; less detail on secondary elements; fewer stories overall.
————–
Conclusion
In summary, Version 1 is a more detailed, granular, and English-friendly analysis. It captures more stories (even very short ones) and provides deeper context in its descriptions and analytical fields (Framing, Narrative Structure). Its use of English for entities and locations makes it more suitable for an international audience.
Version 2 is a more concise, high-level summary. While accurate, it omits the shortest story and presents its data (entities and locations) in the original Russian, suggesting its primary audience may be those familiar with the source language. It effectively captures the main themes but with less depth than Version 1.
