Our new television news story segmentation workflow has demonstrated remarkably accurate results in our tests thus far, matching and even exceeding human performance. At the same time, all of those tests have been performed with relatively recent broadcasts. How well does our workflow perform on broadcasts from a decade and a half ago? Here we examine its performance on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening news broadcasts from September 1, 2011, finding that Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking accurately inventories all of the major stories in each broadcast.
Note that for each of the three broadcasts below, there may be a minute or two of local news at the beginning and end of the broadcast that can lead to local news stories being included in these summaries. Remember that closed captioning for these programs is typically produced by a live-typing human and thus lags the video by 5-10 seconds and thus the clips below may stop and start slightly before/after the actual clip.
We'll start with ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, which you can compare against Vanderbilt's human segmentation.
