Large-Token LLMs: Leveraging GCP PaLM 2’s 32K Token Limit To Summarize An Entire Episode Of Russia’s 60 Minutes – Part 2

Earlier today we examined how GCP's new 32K token models summarize a Russian television news broadcast, finding heavy hallucination and hallucinated editorialization. One potential culprit could be that the transcript we were using was machine translated by Google Translate. Given that PaLM now natively supports Russian language content, what if we asked it to summarize the original Russian-language transcript?

The end result is that we receive HTTP 500 internal server errors until we reduce the input text to just one quarter of the original size, despite the model being able to process the entire text in English and the input token count being far below the maximum input limits. With the much smaller input text, the model hallucinates less, though still hallucinates or conflates details (including who is accused of war crimes) and does hallucinate entire stories in at least one case.

The original source text was 202,000 characters and we finally got the model to return results after shortening to just 45,000 characters (less than a quarter of its original size).
