How large of a role do verified users play in driving the conversation on Twitter? While the company itself does not publish daily statistics about its service, we can construct an estimate of the platform's size and characteristics using its "Spritzer" data stream – a 1% random sample of all tweets that correlates nearly perfectly with the full Twitter dataset, allowing us to trace Twitter's evolution over the past decade. The timeline below shows the estimated percentage of all tweets sent each day (blue) that were by "verified" users (orange). Verified tweets grew sharply from 2012 through 2017, before leveling off and remaining relatively stable through present. Today, verified users account for an estimated 0.6% of all tweets sent each day.
