Global Trends: Creating Custom Global Reports From Our Daily Media Trends Reports

Over the past week, we've demonstrated how to use our daily Media Trends Reports to create customized topically-focused global reports on everything from press freedom and the global macroeconomic landscape to at-risk cultural heritage and worldwide reaction to the US election. Here is the technical workflow you can use to build your own customized bespoke reports.

First, run the following code to download all of the available Media Trends reports for the current day. We then chop off the cover pages to reduce the total page and token count and concatenate the final result into a single PDF:

#INSTALL THE LIBRARIES...
apt-get -y install qpdf
apt-get -y install poppler-utils

#DOWNLOAD ALL OF THE REPORTS
curl -s "https://data.gdeltproject.org/gdeltv5/iatv/todaysmediatrends/20261105.json" | jq -r '.. | objects | .pdf? // empty' | parallel -j 16 curl -s -L {} -o {/}

#CONCATENATE MINUS THE TITLE PAGES
time find *.pdf | parallel --eta 'qpdf {} --pages {} 2-z -- {}-notitle.pdf'
time pdfunite *-notitle.pdf 20261105-COMBINED.pdf
pdfinfo 20261105-COMBINED.pdf

Once you have this final PDF, upload to Gemini with a prompt similar to the one below (modify to your needs):

I'm an NGO researcher focusing on press freedom around the world.
Attached is a compilation of deep trend analysis reports of a day of selected television news channels around the world.
Read through all of these reports and prepare me a custom report that outlines press freedom around the world yesterday
through the eyes of these reports and using ONLY the data from these reports.

And once you have the textual report, go back and ask Gemini to produce a cover image for it:

produce a title page graphic for this report

We are tremendously excited to see what you're able to do with this workflow!
