Earlier this year in collaboration with the Internet Archive, we made available in the Visual Explorer the complete 1996-2002 archive of the incredible television series Net Cafe, hosted by Stewart Cheifet, Jane Wither, and Andrew deVries and chronicling the earliest days of the rise of the modern web. To explore how modern speech transcription technology can be used to make historical television broadcasts from past decades searchable, we have applied Google's Chirp ASR to the complete archive. It is fascinating to explore how it handles technical terminology from decades past. Take a look by viewing any of the broadcasts in the Visual Explorer.
