This past February we unveiled a small collection of US War Department films from World War II in the Visual Explorer's interface to examine how the visual narratives of historical video can be made more readily understandable by researchers. To explore how modern speech transcription tools can be used to render the spoken dialog of such historical films searchable (given their often limited, degraded and damaged audio tracks), we have processed the collection through Google's Chirp ASR model. Take a look by viewing any of the films in the Visual Explorer.
