GigaOM's Derrick Harris talks about the need for humans to actually monitor and take action on the results of "big data" platforms: how massive monitoring platforms issuing alerts still ultimately need someone to do something based on that alert. In the case of GDELT, it detected the earliest glimmers of the Government of Guinea recognizing an emerging outbreak that would become the current Ebola pandemic, but the lack of human analysts focusing on disease in Africa meant these warnings went unheaded.
