Last week RIA Novosti ran an article by Alexander Nosovich alluding to a nuclear assault involving Lithuania that was then abruptly removed. Today accesses to the original article URL displays only the following editorial message:
Ria.ru editorial message. An article by freelance author Alexander Nosovich was removed from the ria.ru website because it did not correspond with the editorial board's opinion, editorial policy, or state policy of the Russian Federation.
For more than a decade, GDELT has provided a live feed of URLs of all of the news articles it discovers across the world to the Internet Archive (only the URLs of the articles), which the Archive then adds to its preservation queue as part of its "No More 404" initiative. This allowed the Internet Archive to preserve this RIA article before it was removed, allowing journalists and scholars to see the original version.
