The timeline below shows the number of daily seconds of airtime mentioning the word "death" somewhere in the onscreen text. Television media first began to fixate on the death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic beginning around March 19, when CNN launched its 9-hours-a-day COVID-19 dashboard. This largely disappeared with the George Floyd protests and BBC, MSNBC and Fox News all largely stopped mentioning death. CNN began to display its dashboard again, but phased it out again at the end of last month as protests intensified. Beginning this month, all four have begun mentioning death more often again as their COVID-19 coverage focuses on the death toll.
