The last few days we've demonstrated how Gemini 2.5 Flash is able to not only segment television news broadcasts into their underlying stories with human-level accuracy, but additionally generate descriptive keywords for each story, geocode it into mapping-ready coordinates, deeply analyze its narrative structure and framing and even list a set of the top ten emotions the story conveys, all by just asking Gemini in plain English via a trivial text prompt. What about an even more powerful use case: giving Gemini that list of stories spanning an entire week of broadcasts and asking it to cluster them together, grouping all of the stories together from the entire week talking about the same events or developments. Instead of using complex semantic clustering software, we simply give Gemini back its list of extracted stories and ask it to group them together.
The results are striking, with Gemini doing a remarkable job of grouping related stories, even grouping a story about avian flu's impact on egg prices together with two other stories about inflation, going as far as to note that all three stories involve or are the result of rising food prices, including a french fry factory that closed due to rising restaurant prices reducing fast food visits. The results here suggest Gemini 2.5 Flash can be used to track stories over time and their evolution, with RAG and other embedding-based models able to help it look over even longer time horizons.
Below you can see the prompt we used. For the list of stories, we simply used the list of stories from the week of February 10th, 2025 that we compiled last month.
You are a television news cataloger whose job it is to read summaries of television news stories and to group stories together that talk about the same thing. Below is a list of television news stories. Each story has a STORYID, TITLE and DESCRIPTION. Read the TITLE and DESCRIPTION fields for all stories and determine which stories (if any) are really talking about the same event/story. Group the stories together into CLUSTERS that talk about the same thing. For each CLUSTER, give it a CLUSTERTITLE and CLUSTERDESCRIPTION and output a list of all of the stories that fall into that cluster. For each story, output its STORYID, followed by its TITLE and DESCRIPTION separated by a colon. For stories that don't talk about the same thing as other stories, output them as their own cluster.

- STORYID: 12 – Elon Musk's Efforts to Combat Government Fraud and Waste: Elon Musk is investigating fraud and waste in the federal government's treasury system, handling trillions in payments. Despite White House discussions, no specific examples of crime or corruption were publicly identified.
- STORYID: 25 – : The Trump administration is undertaking an "unfolding purge" of federal watchdogs and Inspectors General, with over a dozen officials, including the Inspector General of the VA, being fired. These officials, responsible for rooting out misconduct and ensuring public safety in areas like veterans' healthcare, food safety, and highways, are suing to regain their positions, alleging political motivation behind their dismissals. Critics argue this move threatens the independence of oversight bodies and could compromise public safety, while the administration defends it by claiming the fired inspectors failed to perform their duties. The controversy extends to the stripping of security clearances for those representing whistle-blowers, raising concerns about governmental transparency and accountability.

CLUSTERTITLE: Trump's Diplomatic Engagements with Russia and Ukraine Peace Efforts

- STORYID: 19 – : President Trump initiates diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, holding phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. These talks mark a significant shift in U.S. policy, which previously avoided direct engagement with Putin regarding the conflict. The discussions include agreements to begin negotiations and a potential in-person meeting between Trump and Putin. The new U.S. stance suggests Ukraine might need to cede territory and that NATO membership is unlikely post-war, raising concerns among Democrats and putting pressure on Zelenskyy.
- STORYID: 20 – : American school teacher Marc Fogel, detained for over three years in Russia for marijuana possession, has been released and is back on U.S. soil. His release came in exchange for the U.S. freeing a Russian cybercriminal. While the release occurred on the heels of President Trump's call with Vladimir Putin, Trump denies that Fogel's release was part of the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
- STORYID: 27 – Trump's Ukraine Peace Plan and International Reactions: President Trump is pursuing a peace plan for the nearly 3-year-old war in Ukraine, proposing U.S. and Russian officials meet in Munich with Ukraine invited. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's spokesperson states Ukraine does not expect talks with Russia now and requires a common position with the U.S. and Europe first. Critics draw parallels to the 1938 Munich appeasement of Hitler, fearing Trump's potential concessions to Putin. Ukrainian leaders express concern over being excluded from peace talks, feeling a sense of betrayal. Moscow, however, is gleeful about the prospect of talks. Meanwhile, the war continues to rage, with a recent attack on Kramatorsk causing casualties. The long-term impact of the war on Ukraine is highlighted, with physical recovery possible but internal wounds lasting. White House sources indicate Trump's approach to foreign policy norms is "out the window," suggesting any deal will likely be between Trump and Putin directly, not necessarily what Zelenskyy desires.

This plan aims to incentivize domestic manufacturing. A Pittsburgh manufacturer, Accu Tracks Products, sees both potential benefits (increased demand for local sourcing) and challenges (higher costs due to tariffs on key imported materials like aluminum). Historically, similar tariffs have led to higher prices for consumers and a decrease in hiring in the manufacturing industry. The overall economic impact of the new tariff plan remains uncertain and dependent on various factors.

- STORYID: 43 – US Deportations to Central American Prisons: The U.S. has begun deporting illegally present Africans and Asians to Panama and El Salvador, not their home countries. El Salvador's President offered to accept deported criminals for a fee, housing them in its notorious "Center for the Confinement of Terrorism" (CECOT) prison. ---------------------- STORYID: 20 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: American school teacher Marc Fogel, detained for over three years in Russia for marijuana possession, has been released and is back on U.S. soil. His release came in exchange for the U.S. freeing a Russian cybercriminal. While the release occurred on the heels of President Trump's call with Vladimir Putin, Trump denies that Fogel's release was part of the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. ---------------------- STORYID: 21 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: A severe weather system is impacting various regions of the United States. A significant blast of snow is expected from the Central U.S. to the Northeast, with Chicago anticipating up to half a foot. Heavy rain is falling in the South, posing a threat of tornadoes in areas like Montgomery, Alabama, and New Orleans. Additionally, Southern California faces a high risk of flash flooding and mudslides due to forecasted heavy rainfall on fire-scarred land. ---------------------- STORYID: 22 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that nonviolent, low-risk migrant detainees are being sent to the new immigration detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This contradicts President Trump's earlier statements that the facility would house "worst migrants with criminal records," raising questions about the administration's policy. ---------------------- STORYID: 23 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: Inflation has risen to 3%, primarily due to increased costs in groceries, gasoline, and rent. Eggs, in particular, are scarce and leading the rise in grocery prices. The shortage is exacerbated by bird flu, which has led to the culling of tens of millions of chickens. Commercial farms face significant delays in replenishing supply, as new chicks take up to eight months to start laying eggs, indicating that the egg shortage will persist for many months even if the avian flu is eliminated. ---------------------- STORYID: 24 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: The 2009 Colgan Air Flight 3407 crash near Buffalo, which killed 50 people, served as a turning point in American aviation safety. Investigations revealed pilot error, and in response, the victims' families successfully lobbied for the federal Airline Safety Bill. This legislation mandated 1500 hours of flight training for copilots, established a pilot performance database, and required pilots to have ten hours of rest before flying. Despite regional airlines' current attempts to roll back these training requirements, the families continue to advocate for the regulations, emphasizing that their collective action has been crucial in maintaining U.S. air travel safety, especially in light of a recent mid-air collision that ended a nearly 16-year safety streak. ---------------------- STORYID: 25 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: The Trump administration is undertaking an "unfolding purge" of federal watchdogs and Inspectors General, with over a dozen officials, including the Inspector General of the VA, being fired. ---------------------- STORYID: 26 TITLE: DESCRIPTION: President Trump has ordered the "Gulf of Mexico" to be renamed the "Gulf of America," leading to a dispute with the Associated Press (AP). When the AP refused to adopt the new name, citing its global news agency status and the need for internationally recognized place names, an AP reporter was barred from an Oval Office event. The AP has protested this ban, stating it impedes public access to independent news and violates the First Amendment. ---------------------- STORYID: 27 TITLE: Trump's Ukraine Peace Plan and International Reactions DESCRIPTION: President Trump is pursuing a peace plan for the nearly 3-year-old war in Ukraine, proposing U.S. and Russian officials meet in Munich with Ukraine invited. ---------------------- STORYID: 28 TITLE: Federal Prosecutors Resign Over Dropped Charges Against NYC Mayor Eric Adams DESCRIPTION: Three federal prosecutors, including the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, have resigned in protest after the Justice Department ordered them to drop criminal charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Adams had been indicted for bribery, fraud, and soliciting contributions from foreign nationals. The former head prosecutor alleges a quid pro quo, suggesting Mayor Adams implied he wouldn't cooperate with the Trump administration unless charges were dropped. The acting Deputy Attorney General, Emil Bove, close to President Trump, is described as trying to root out "unhelpful prosecutors" and has denied the quid pro quo claim, stating he will investigate those who resigned. ---------------------- STORYID: 29 TITLE: Louisiana Seeks Extradition of NYC Doctor for Abortion Pills DESCRIPTION: The Governor of Louisiana has signed an extradition warrant for a New York City doctor accused of sending abortion pills into Louisiana, where abortion is banned. ---------------------- STORYID: 33 TITLE: RFK Jr. Confirmed as HHS Secretary, Supported by "Make America Healthy Again" Movement DESCRIPTION: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been sworn in as Secretary of Health and Human Services following a 52-48 Senate confirmation vote, with former Republican leader Mitch McConnell notably voting no. Kennedy will oversee key health agencies like the FDA, NIH, and CDC. His confirmation is largely attributed to the "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) movement, an unlikely coalition of parents focused on healthy food, environmental toxins, and chronic diseases. While Kennedy has pledged to address these issues, he has also repeated the debunked claim that autism comes from vaccines. MAHA supporters, despite their diverse political backgrounds, unite on the belief that Kennedy will prioritize children's health and parental rights, and plan to push for legislation related to food additives and vaccine safety. ---------------------- STORYID: 34 TITLE: National Weather: Atmospheric River Brings Rain, Snow, and Tornadoes DESCRIPTION: An atmospheric river is causing heavy rain in Southern California, leading to fears of mudslides in wildfire-scarred areas, with significant rainfall expected. This system will then move east, bringing snow to Chicago and a mix of snow, rain, and ice to the Northeast. Additionally, the forecast includes recent tornado activity in Mississippi, with cleanup underway and a similar high risk for Saturday. ---------------------- STORYID: 35 TITLE: Bridging the Divide: Political Opposites Revisit Friendship After Election DESCRIPTION: The "Eye on America" segment revisits Reverend Rodney Sadler (progressive liberal) and Lance Moseley (Trump supporter) who met on a summer rafting trip, discovering common ground despite deep political differences. After the election, they reconvene, revealing continued stark disagreements on President Trump's return to the White House and the future of democracy. While their differences remain, their shared experience on the river fostered a metaphor for needing to "row down this river together" as Americans, emphasizing that while rafting didn't erase their differences, it encouraged a deeper connection. ---------------------- STORYID: 36 TITLE: Bakery Sues Town Over Mural Deemed "Advertising Sign" DESCRIPTION: In Conway, New Hampshire, a "trial of the century" is set to begin involving Leavitt's Country Bakery and a mural on its roof. The mural, depicting muffins and doughnuts, was painted by a high school art teacher. However, the town views it as an advertising sign, not a mural, because it depicts bakery products. As a sign, it is four times larger than allowed and the town demands its removal. Leavitt's Bakery has sued in federal court, arguing that the town's restriction on the mural's content violates the baker's freedom of speech, turning it into a civil rights case. ---------------------- STORYID: 37 TITLE: Justice Department Turmoil Over Mayor Adams Case DESCRIPTION: Federal prosecutors are resigning in protest over alleged pressure from Trump-aligned leaders to drop criminal charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. His remarks and meetings, including with a controversial German party leader and Ukraine's Zelenskyy, stirred controversy and raised questions about U.S. national interests. ---------------------- STORYID: 39 TITLE: Mid-Air Collision Investigation Update DESCRIPTION: The NTSB reports that pilots of an Army helicopter involved in a deadly mid-air collision near Washington may not have heard air traffic control messages and the Black Hawk may have provided bad altitude data. Wade. ---------------------- STORYID: 42 TITLE: Major Storm Brings Flooding to South, Ice to Northeast DESCRIPTION: A single storm system is causing widespread severe weather across the U.S., with significant flash flooding predicted for the Tennessee Valley (up to 9 inches of rain) and substantial icing expected in the Northeast, particularly in areas like the Poconos and Southern Green Mountains. ---------------------- STORYID: 43 TITLE: US Deportations to Central American Prisons DESCRIPTION: The U.S. has begun deporting illegally present Africans and Asians to Panama and El Salvador, not their home countries. Concerns are raised about harsh prison conditions and the potential for deportees, even those without criminal records, to be held in what human rights advocates call a "black hole of human rights." ---------------------- STORYID: 44 TITLE: The Secret to a Long and Happy Marriage DESCRIPTION: Steve Hartman reports from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Don and Marilyn Barnett, a couple married for 68 years, who attribute their lasting happiness to a nightly ritual: Don singing to Marilyn before bed, a practice they've maintained for 50 years, even through hospital stays, which helps resolve disagreements and calm them. ---------------------- STORYID: 45 TITLE: Federal Government Layoffs DESCRIPTION: Details on a new wave of layoffs within the federal government are expected. ---------------------- STORYID: 46 TITLE: New Non-Addictive Pain Medication DESCRIPTION: A new medication is available that relieves pain without the risk of abuse or addiction.
