LLM Entity Extraction Vs LLM Embeddings: Discontinuous Failure Points Vs Smooth Responsiveness

Over the past two days we've explored how small changes of a few words in the input text to an LLM can lead to massive changes in its output. To what degree do these same changes manifest themselves in LLM-based embedding similarity scores? Unlike using LLMs for extraction tasks, in which they exhibit discontinuous failure points, LLM-based embedders do not appear to have the same failures – instead providing a smoothly decreasing similarity score based on the volume and centrality of the removed text, rather than massive changes seemingly occurring randomly with the removal of noise words.

Using the same first five minutes of thisĀ ABC Evening News broadcast that we explored earlier today and the same set of edits that led to triggering infinite loop and failure mode behaviors with Bison, how does Gecko perform, given that it is also an LLM?

Here are the final set of sentences:

Their respective similarity rankings via Vertex (Gecko) can be seen below. Interestingly, removing "airport" from the embedding does not change its similarity score to the original text within the first three decimals. This offers a reminder that small changes that are not central to the source text typically do not cause major changes to the resulting embedding – one of the benefits of embedding-based search. Reassuringly, other than the first two modified sentences that are tied, the sentences fall into descending order, with the more text removed, the further it is scored from the source text.

The similarity scores decrease at a slowing rate the more text is removed, with a small drop for sentence 3 that removes just two short sentences and a major drop to sentence 4 that drops five lengthy sentences. Sentence 5 that additionally removes just another short sentence shows only a small decline in similarity. Thus, unlike our extraction task, which exhibited discontinuous failure points, embeddings appear to respond exactly as we would expect.
