Large-Token LLMs: Leveraging Anthropic's Claude 2's 100K Token Limit To Summarize An Entire Episode Of Russia's 60 Minutes

Earlier today we demonstrated the extraordinary power of Anthropic's Claude 2's 100,000 token limit to summarize and topically annotate into discrete stories an entire 30-minute episode of an ABC Evening News broadcast with a single prompt. Let's repeat this process with a vastly larger text: the complete transcript of a 2.5-hour episode of Russia's "60 Minutes", machine transcribed and translated into English. This text totals 20,357 words (116,149 characters / 95,793 without spaces). The end result seen below shows both the immense power and attention limitations of large-token LLMs.

The fundamentally new capabilities that become possible when an LLM can process an entire text in a single prompt, without the need for prompt chaining or external memories, cannot be understated. In this case, summarizing this broadcast using low-token LLMs requires prompt chaining or clustering and hierarchical summarization and results in significant hallucination, story dropout and instability. In contrast, with Claude 2 the exact same story was uploaded and operated over by the LLM in its entirety in a single prompt. This is the future of LLMs. Though, even as experimental LLMs already scale past one million tokens and beyond, there will still be a long-term need for external memories to scale across web-scale corpi.

At the same time, token input scaling does not necessarily solve the attendant attention scaling and stability issues inherent in smaller models. As the examples below show, even though Claude 2 was able to process the entire text at once, when asked to distill it down to component stories and summarize each, it yielded reasonable, but unstable and not quite comprehensive results, with some stories consistently reported and others alternating in how they were presented or whether they were presented at all. Smaller stories were occasionally placed on equal footing with dominate themes or excluded entirely. This suggests that large-token LLMs, while able to process entire texts, may require more consideration for attention limitations.
