One of the greatest limitations of current LLMs, besides hallucination and instability, is their severe input limits: most common production LLMs are limited to around 4,000 tokens, with select LLMs reaching up to 32,000 tokens. This means that when summarizing television news transcripts, which commonly exceed these limits by a substantial margin, we have to either use prompt-chaining that typically results in attention loss or severe hallucination, or embedding chunking and clustering. Unfortunately, the traditional two tower ANN approach doesn't work for summarization, since our requirement is to summarize the entire text, rather than guide the LLM to a small passage in a larger text. Similarly, embedding clustering is complicated by the fact that television news transcripts take the form of endless stream-of-consciousness streams of words that are not easy to group into meaningful chunks for embedding. Not to mention the fact that even when manually chunked, the wild variation in chunk sizes often leads to size affinity overcoming topical affinity in embedding similarity scoring.
Anthropic's Claude 2 represents a newer generation of LLMs that have significantly higher token limitations: in this case to a maximum of 100,000 tokens. Such limits are high enough that for the first time we can skip all of this and simply hand the LLM the entire transcript at once. What does it look like to summarize a complete transcript in a single pass?
Let's examine an ABC Evening News broadcast from February 4, 2023. You can see the original broadcast transcript and Vanderbilt Television News Archive's human-analyzed story segmentation of the broadcast. The complete transcript, with all advertising removed, constitutes 3,828 words totaling 22,459 characters (18,631 characters without spaces) – well above the token limitations of Bard and ChatGPT.
The results below showcase the extraordinary power of large-token LLMs, with Claude 2 able to summarize the entire transcript in a single pass. With advertising manually removed, the results are almost identical to Vanderbilt's hand-annotated version, with all of the primary stories described consistently and only two smaller stories missing (which were small enough to be lumped together in "other news" in the human annotation). When the complete transcript, without hand removal of advertising, is used, the results are still impressive, but the LLM becomes lost towards the end and consistently excludes the last two stories, but does add in the two previously excluded zoo stories.
Here we'll take the entire transcript and save it to a text file. We will then upload this to Claude 2 and analyze.
Let's start by asking it to produce just a short summary ("Summarize the attached television news transcript"):
- Tonight, there are several developing stories including the suspected Chinese spy balloon hovering over the U.S. and being tracked by the Pentagon. The balloon is believed to be headed towards North Carolina and there is discussion about whether there will be a window to shoot it down. Note that all three runs yield extremely reasonable results, correctly subdividing the transcript almost identically to how Vanderbilt's human annotators segmented it. The results are also remarkably stable. It does exclude the Dallas and Central Park Zoo stories, but captures the main stories that Vanderbilt's annotators felt were described in sufficient detail to warrant their own item listings.
Let's try machine-readable output ("Divide the attached text into a set of discrete stories, make them into a bulleted list with a title and short description and summary of each. Output the results in JSON format, with each story having fields Title, Description and Summary.")

Once again the results are highly accurate and stable.
What if we go back and upload the full transcript that INCLUDES advertising (the transcript used above had the advertising manually removed). This totals 4,893 words (28,765 characters or 23,873 characters minus spaces).
Again, we'll use our prompt "Divide the attached text into a set of discrete stories, make them into a bulleted list with a title and short description and summary of each.":
Based on the text, I have divided it into the following stories:
– Chinese spy balloon over U.S.
– A large Chinese surveillance balloon has been spotted hovering over the continental U.S. at high altitude. It is being tracked by the Pentagon and they are considering options to shoot it down safely over water. The U.S. says China's actions are unacceptable. This has led to the postponement of a high-level diplomatic trip.
– Dangerous cold blast hits Northeast U.S.
– A powerful arctic cold front is bringing dangerously low wind chills across the northeastern U.S. Wind chill temperatures could reach as low as -60°F in some areas. This extreme cold presents a threat of hypothermia and frostbite. States of emergency have been declared and warming shelters opened.
– ER doctor killed in alleged attack after bike crash
– In California, an emergency room doctor was struck by a vehicle while cycling. The driver then allegedly got out of the car and stabbed the doctor. Bystanders restrained the attacker but the doctor later died. The suspect has been arrested on charges including murder.
– Plane wings clip during ground incident at Newark airport
– At Newark Liberty Airport, the wing of a parked United Airlines plane that was preparing for takeoff was hit by the wing of another United plane that was being towed. No injuries were reported but there was damage to one of the wings. The FAA is investigating the incident.
– Strong January jobs report despite interest rate hikes
– The latest U.S. jobs report showed a gain of 517,000 jobs in January. This was much higher than economists expected. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.4%, the lowest since 1969. The report indicates the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes to combat inflation have not significantly slowed the economy yet.
– Latest developments in Alex Murdaugh double murder trial
– In the double murder trial of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, a state expert admitted they could not conclusively link shotgun evidence to the murders of Murdaugh's wife and son. Meanwhile, the judge is deciding whether to allow evidence that Murdaugh stole millions in settlement money from his housekeeper's sons after her death.
Remarkably, it is able to completely ignore the advertising and return just the core stories. Though, in this case it skipped the last two stories involving the Nichols case and Robin Roberts.
Let's try a second time:
Here are the key stories extracted from the text:
– Chinese spy balloon over US
– A large Chinese surveillance balloon has been spotted hovering over the continental US for several days. The Pentagon is tracking the balloon but has decided not to shoot it down yet due to risks of debris. The US believes the balloon is being maneuvered by China and Secretary of State Blinken has postponed his planned trip to China.
– Dangerous arctic cold in Northeast US
– A life-threatening arctic cold front is moving into the Northeastern US, with wind chills expected to reach -60F in some areas, potentially breaking records. Over 25 million Americans are under wind chill advisories and a state of emergency has been declared in some places. At least one death has already been attributed to the cold.
– ER doctor killed in California
– An emergency room doctor riding his bicycle in California was intentionally struck by a car, and then the driver got out and stabbed him. The doctor later died from his injuries. The suspect has been arrested and charged with murder.
– Newark airport collision
– Two passenger jets clipped wings at Newark Liberty Airport. One plane was getting ready to take off while the other was being towed. No injuries were reported but there was some damage to the wing of the departing plane. The FAA is investigating.
– Strong January jobs report
– The January jobs report showed employers added 517,000 jobs last month, far exceeding expectations. The unemployment rate fell to 3.4%, tying a 53-year low. The strong report indicates the Federal Reserve may need to continue raising interest rates to fight inflation.
– Developments in Alex Murdaugh murder trial
– In the trial of Alex Murdaugh for the murder of his wife and son, a ballistics expert admitted the state does not have the murder weapons. The judge is also considering whether to allow evidence related to Murdaugh's alleged financial crimes. Prosecutors say he deceived his late housekeeper's family out of a $4M insurance settlement after her death.
This time it truncates at the same location, dropping the last two stories.
And a third:
Here is a bulleted list summarizing the key stories in the attached text:
– Chinese spy balloon over U.S.
– A large Chinese surveillance balloon was spotted flying over the continental United States. The Pentagon is tracking the balloon's path and considering options to shoot it down if it reaches a safe location over water. Secretary of State Blinken postponed his planned trip to China due to the "unacceptable" action.
– Dangerous cold hits Northeast
– A "once in a generation" arctic blast is bringing life-threatening cold to the Northeast U.S. Wind chills could reach -60°F in some areas. The extreme cold has already turned deadly, with a tree falling on a car in Massachusetts, killing a 6-month-old baby. A cold emergency is in effect in Boston.
– California doctor killed in attack
– An emergency room doctor was struck and killed in an attack while riding his bicycle in California. Police say a motorist slammed into the doctor, then got out of his car and stabbed the victim. Bystanders detained the attacker but the doctor died at the hospital. The suspect has been arrested and charged.
– Newark airport scare as jets clip wings
– A scary incident occurred at Newark airport when a plane waiting to take off had its wing clipped by another empty plane being towed. No injuries were reported but passengers were shaken. The FAA is investigating the cause.
– January jobs report beats expectations
– The January jobs report significantly beat expectations, with employers adding 517,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate fell to 3.4%, the lowest since 1969. The strong report signals the Federal Reserve will likely continue raising interest rates to fight inflation.
– Developments in Alex Murdaugh trial
– In the double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, the defense questioned the lack of the murder weapons. Meanwhile, evidence emerged that Murdaugh deceived his housekeeper's family after her death at his home, steering them to sue him but hiding a $5 million insurance payout.
– Dallas Zoo charges man in monkey case
– Police in Dallas have charged a man in connection with the disappearance of two monkeys from the Dallas Zoo, along with other vandalism. The monkeys were found later at an abandoned church.
– Owl escapes Central Park Zoo
– An owl escaped from its enclosure at the Central Park Zoo in New York after vandals damaged its habitat. The bird has been spotted around the city while the zoo tries to recapture it.
The third time it truncated the last two stories as it did the previous two times, BUT for the first time it added the Dallas Zoo and Central Park Zoo stories.
What about machine-readable JSON output? ("Divide the attached text into a set of discrete stories, make them into a bulleted list with a title and short description and summary of each. Output the results in JSON format, with each story having fields Title, Description and Summary."):

Once again it truncates the last two stories, but does add in the two zoo stories both times.
