One of the greatest limitations of current LLMs, besides hallucination and instability, is their severe input limits: most common production LLMs are limited to around 4,000 tokens, with select LLMs reaching up to 32,000 tokens. Anthropic's Claude 2 represents a newer generation of LLMs that have significantly higher token limitations: in this case to a maximum of 100,000 tokens. Such limits are high enough that for the first time we can skip all of this and simply hand the LLM the entire transcript at once. What does it look like to summarize a complete transcript in a single pass?

You can see the original broadcast transcript and Vanderbilt Television News Archive's human-analyzed story segmentation of the broadcast. The complete transcript, with all advertising removed, constitutes 3,828 words totaling 22,459 characters (18,631 characters without spaces) – well above the token limitations of Bard and ChatGPT.

With advertising manually removed, the results are almost identical to Vanderbilt's hand-annotated version, with all of the primary stories described consistently and only two smaller stories missing (which were small enough to be lumped together in "other news" in the human annotation). When the complete transcript, without hand removal of advertising, is used, the results are still impressive, but the LLM becomes lost towards the end and consistently excludes the last two stories, but does add in the two previously excluded zoo stories.
