Is Twitter still growing? While the company itself does not publish daily statistics about its service, we can construct an estimate of the platform's size and characteristics using its "Spritzer" data stream – a 1% random sample of all tweets that correlates nearly perfectly with the full Twitter dataset, allowing us to trace Twitter's evolution over the past decade. The timeline below shows the total estimated daily tweets (blue) and unique tweeting users (orange) by day from January 2012 through March 2022, showing that the platform peaked in July 2013, declined through 2018, surged at the start of the pandemic, collapsed around the 2020 election and has returned to its 2012 levels. Rather than a rapidly growing platform, Twitter appears to have stabilized at the same daily tweet volume it was at a decade ago.
