Axios noted recently that in Google searches, “coronavirus” had collapsed to less than a quarter of its peak, placing it just above “Covid” as a search term now. Looking at news coverage we can see a very similar pattern play out.
The timeline below shows the number of mentions of Covid, coronavirus and just plain “virus” on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News using data from the Internet Archive's Television News Archive from the start of this year through present, by day processed by the GDELT Project.
Virus and Coronavirus were mentioned roughly equally in the early days of the pandemic, with Coronavirus taking off around Feb. 24 and steadily falling in mentions since, even as virus and Covid have remained roughly stable.
