The GDELT Project

How Television News Story Segmentation Could Be Used To Help Citizens Connect With Their Local Governments

Local municipalities all across the United States hold a range of meetings, debates, hearings, press conferences, public comment opportunities and myriad other local government events each and every day that directly impact their residents. At the same time, few residents have the time to spend hours each evening reviewing the complete transcripts of each and every public meeting their local government held that day. Even residents particularly interested in a given topic might find it challenging to find the time to watch an entire 2.5-hour refuse rate board meeting to see what major topics they covered today. Given the continued success of our television news story segmentation workflow, what would it look like to have Gemini 2.5 Flash Thinking examine the transcripts of three San Francisco Government TV broadcasts from August 31, 2023 (Public Utilities Commission, Recreation and Park Commission and Refuse Rate Board meetings), identify all of the major stories discussed in each and create a simple easy-to-understand index of all of the stories and links to each of the places those stories are discussed in the broadcast? The results are extremely promising and offer a glimpse at a future in which the workings of local government can be distilled down into accessible and simple lists of all of the topics discussed and links directly to the public meeting minutes where they were debated, rendering local government far more accessible to its residents.

Let's start with this 30-minute Public Utilities Commission meeting.
