Just how big is Twitter? While the company itself does not publish daily statistics about its service, we can construct an estimate of the platform's size and characteristics using its "Spritzer" data stream – a 1% random sample of all tweets that correlates nearly perfectly with the full Twitter dataset, allowing us to trace Twitter's evolution over the past decade. The timeline below shows the total estimated daily tweets (blue) and unique tweeting users (orange) by day from January 2012 through March 2022. From its peak in July 2013, daily tweet volume steadily declined through 2019, before increasing explosively in the first few weeks of pandemic lockdowns back to its 2013 peak of nearly 500 million daily tweets.
