Generative Image AI: How Western Norms & Light Skin Tones Dominate DALL-E's Generated Person Imagery

One of the more striking aspects of DALL-E's generated person imagery is the degree to which it reflects traditional Western norms and light skin tones. Asked to depict a president, it prefers classical white men. A "happy couple" is a man and a woman. A wedding is traditional Western hetero coupling of a bride in white and groom in a tux. A "holiday" is Christmas. Clothing that is "casual" or "professional business" reflect Western standards. Hair styles and grooming are largely Western-centric. Skin tones range in a very narrow band that skews very light. Everyone has a perfect physique, flawless face and hair and model looks.

The images below capture a small cross-section of some of the trends we've observed to date with DALL-E's default person creations. Whether or not AI image generators offer country-specific defaults that reflect the locality of each user (thus producing imagery that reflects the local culture of the country a user is based in), it is likely that as use of such image generators scales up in the Western world and given the centrality of large cloud data centers in those countries, the volume of AI-generated imagery on the web that reflects Western norms will increase dramatically even beyond the current dominance of Western culture in online imagery.
