Continuing our series of experiments on using LLMs to classify programming on a television news as news / not news using EPG program title data in order to discern news programming from paid and non-news programming based on show titles, what if we expanded our experiments up to 11 full years of a major US business channel? In all, there were 1,498 distinct program titles on the channel over those 11 years according to its EPG data, ranging from "Bloomberg Markets" which is clearly news-related to "Organic Juice Cleanse for Free", "Red Copper – The All Purpose Cupper and Ceramic Square Pan" and "Rare Silver US Coins" which are clearly not. Could we leverage the massive knowledge encoded in foundation LLMs (Gemini 1.5 Pro in this case) to classify all of these show titles into news and non-news fully automatically?
In the end, Gemini 1.5 Pro took 411 seconds to classify all 1,498 unique EPG program titles into news / not news, resulting in 837 show titles deemed to be "news". The resulting list appears to be quite reasonable and represents a quantum leap from past approaches of having human beings manually review and research individual program titles and demonstrates the tremendous potential of leveraging the world knowledge of LLMs for known program classification tasks based purely on show titles. In contrast, asking Gemini to suggest a minimal set of search keywords results less useful results.
Here we take the complete list of 1,498 unique EPG program titles and ask Gemini 1.5 Pro to classify each as news or non-news. Based on our previous findings that Gemini distinguishes between pure news and news commentary and that our methodology requires the inclusion of both, we use a modified prompt that requests inclusion of anything news adjacent:
