Visiting George Washington's Mount Vernon estate this past weekend, I noticed an engraving hanging over the fireplace in his study. I was too far away to get a clear picture, but was able to snap the photo you see above from a sharp angle that unfortunately made the text entirely illegible. Google Images kept finding engravings on carved wooden walls and images with trees and horses, but never this specific engraving. Enter Gemini: given just the photo above and "identify this picture", Gemini correctly identified it as "A Hunting Piece in the Hunting Hall at Houghton." It is an etching/engraving by Daniel Lerpinière, created after the original painting by John Wootton, and originally published in London by John Boydell in 1778. It further provided links to a digital copy on Wikipedia (see below), copies held by the Smithsonian and British Museum, and even identified a copy recently at auction! From a quick cellphone snap of an engraving on the wall to a full identification, links to museums holding copies and even copies at auction, Gemini once again proves the tremendous capabilities of modern LMM visual understanding coupled with Google Search.
