Stepping back, however, the real purpose of such analysis in the diplomatic sphere is often to craft counter-narratives, using human SMEs to read through the day's news coverage from an adversarial state, determining which narratives are central to the day's coverage and drafting coherent persuasive rebuttals to counter them. What if we could completely automate this entire process from end to end, using AI to watch a complete day of television news in another country, identify all of the mentions of specific strategic interest and write point-by-point bespoke rebuttals to all of the arguments that run counter to strategic interests?

To explore this further, we'll have Google's Chirp ASR API watch a complete 24 hours of Russia 1 on February 16, 2024, transcribe it all into a fully automated Russian transcript, then feed the complete full-day output to Gemini 1.5 Pro with a set of prompts that ask it to identify anti-Zelenskyy mentions, pro-Russian mentions and claims that sanctions against Russia are failing and to write point-by-point rebuttals to each – all without any human in the loop. For the purposes of this demonstration we'll use AI Studio and run the prompts by hand, but this entire workflow could be fully automated using the Gemini API to run 24/7 without any human intervention, generating hourly reports of strategically important narratives airing on Russian television and sample bespoke rebuttals to each that human State Department analysts could review to verify and polish and send onward for possible diplomatic use.

Even more intriguingly, we'll examine the idea of an autonomously-written daily Fireside Chat to be published daily in an American newspaper aimed at the American public that compiles and refutes point-by-point the major Russian narratives of the previous day. Then we expand this to versions aimed at the Ukrainian and Russian militaries, exploring the full range of wartime narrative messaging and how they can be automated. One major finding is that Gemini is insensitive to geographic context (it writes the same message to an American, Russian and Ukrainian audience without any customization), but is tuned for audience customization (targeting soldiers versus the general public), though it struggles from reduced prompt coherence at times, such as believing Russian soldiers are fighting on behalf of Ukraine when writing in Russian, even as it phrases things correctly when writing in English.
