Fully Autonomous Diplomacy + Counter-Messaging Experiments With ChatGPT + GDELT

Given the ability of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to craft human-like prose, how easily could they be used to fully autonomously watch television news, identify narratives that run counter to US interests and generate articulate and fluent counter-messages for different mediums, ready for distribution and without any human intervention required? Such use cases are extremely ethically fraught, but their inevitable application raises the question of just how easy current tools might make this process and how useable the end results might be.

Last month we explored the ability of ChatGPT to summarize international television news broadcasts, using as an example the opening few minutes of a Persian-language IRINN broadcast that have been machine transcribed and translated. Here we will use that same opening segment and ask ChatGPT to write a series of counter-messages to it.

First, we'll start by testing ChatGPT's ability to digest and summarize the segment:

Prompt:

Summarize the following Iranian television news transcript: "The President of Cuba, in a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of our country, said that the American government only He thinks about his own interests and does not value others. You are watching from the channel. He also said that Cuba is determined to cooperate with friendly countries and remove obstacles to its progress, despite the pressures. Cuban Foreign Minister also condemned the unilateral sanctions against Iran during the meeting with Mr. Amir Abdollahian. interference He condemned some countries in Iran's internal affairs and said that we stand in solidarity with Iran regarding the measures taken to stabilize the pilgrims. Our country's foreign minister also said in a meeting with Cuban officials that the US's policy of unilateral and bullying sanctions has been condemned. He visited Cuba, this country is the last destination of our country's foreign minister's trip to Latin America. Iran is a claimant in the JCPOA equation, and the western parties owe it to the political deputy of the foreign minister . As in the past, the other party gives fake excuses and following discussions that are beyond Mr. Bagheri's control, he said that one of the experiences of the JCPOA for the country is that one should not trust the enemy under any circumstances. He knew the JCPOA and said that it was always said that if there was an agreement, he would do such and such thing. According to the country's chief negotiator, the government did not tie the fate of the country to the issue of negotiations, but this does not mean a shortcoming in the negotiations. The Deputy Foreign Minister also said that Iran will use its tools. with opposite parties in different ways It continues and the negotiations are divided into different parts and the JCPOA and the mistake they want to blame on Iran are made by the four American countries, England , France and Germany, with a wrong impression or perhaps by publishing a statement against our country's nuclear activities. The four usual countries, the United States, England, France and Germany, made a statement against Iran 's nuclear activities. On Friday morning, they said that according to the new report of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has not fulfilled its nuclear obligations. Iran says that we made a mistake. Iran's claim that this The action taken is insufficient, but we judge Iran's actions based on the impartial and objective reports of the agency. The agency did not do the right thing in the inspection that it did, and the agency made a correspondence, and the agency realized its wrong perception, and the agency decided to He must report every three months on the monitoring of Iran's activities. We have 3% of the world's nuclear capacity, and 25% of the agency's inspections are carried out in Iran. I have not done a single case to say that you deviated. It was not a problem The issue of Iran allows the JCPOA to carry out regular inspections with the International Atomic Energy Agency. America has withdrawn from the JCPOA on Roko and the Europeans have been stopped for five years in the preliminary phase of the JCPOA implementation. It has only been operational for about 14 months, whether it has been operational or not , but there is still not enough information, which is why some journalists have asked the European authorities about the survival of the JCPOA. Do you still believe that the JCPOA is alive? It should be on standby or ready, but not the other thing you said, which means that it should not be taken, he said that the JCPOA is stuck alive and dead in the purgatory of the West's behavior , on the one hand, be practical and ready to talk by sending a mediator and a letter from the United States of America, a series of messages to We have given the data to transfer it to Iran regarding an issue that is not directly related to this nuclear agreement . There were various other issues in this regard, this method is called carrot and stick policy, the method that can work. Make it difficult for the negotiators for those of the talks They welcome the lifting of sanctions."

Response:

The President of Cuba expressed solidarity with Iran during a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister, condemning American unilateralism and sanctions against Iran. The Iranian Foreign Minister also criticized the US policy of sanctions during a meeting with Cuban officials. The discussion touched on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister stating that Iran will continue to negotiate with opposing parties and that the western parties owe it to Iran to fulfill their obligations under the agreement. The International Atomic Energy Agency's inspection of Iran's nuclear activities was also discussed, with Iran claiming that the agency did not carry out the inspection correctly. The JCPOA is still alive but stuck in the purgatory of the West's behavior. The US has employed a carrot and stick policy to make negotiations difficult, but Iran welcomes the lifting of sanctions.

Overall this summary is reasonable, meaning ChatGPT has caught the overall general gist of the segment and thus is in a position to craft counter-messaging to it.

Let's also test its ability to summarize the original Persian machine transcript into English, skipping the machine translation stage:

The text is in Persian and discusses recent diplomatic meetings involving the United States, Cuba, and Iran. The Cuban president criticized US policies and expressed Cuba's determination to cooperate with friendly countries. Cuba's foreign minister also condemned US sanctions against Iran in a meeting with the Iranian foreign minister. The Iranian foreign ministry's political deputy emphasized that Iran seeks to lift new sanctions but the other side makes false excuses. He also stated that Iran does not trust its enemies and has divided the negotiations into different sections. The negotiations regarding the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) continue.

The summary is slightly less detailed, but overall contains a similar general gist.

For counter-messaging purposes, the first step is to determine whether a given passage contains narratives we wish to counter. For the purposes of this experiment, let's assume our system is designed to monitor Iranian state television for narratives that criticize the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) (the US-Iran nuclear deal) in order to counter them.

In a production pipeline, we would take each chunk of the broadcast transcript and feed it into ChatGPT with a prompt asking it whether the given text criticizes the JCPOA. Thus, we would have:

Prompt:

Response:

The text contains mixed opinions about the JCPOA, but overall it expresses negative sentiment towards the US government and its policy of imposing unilateral and bullying sanctions. The Cuban Foreign Minister condemned the unilateral sanctions against Iran, while the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister criticized the western parties for not fulfilling their obligations under the JCPOA and for blaming Iran for their mistake. The text suggests that Iran cannot trust the enemy under any circumstances and that the JCPOA is stuck in the purgatory of the West's behavior. Overall, the text expresses frustration with the lack of progress in the implementation of the JCPOA and the unfair treatment of Iran by some countries.

ChatGPT tells us that this text contains negative sentiments towards the JCPOA, so we know we should proceed to the next stage: crafting a countering narrative.

Let's first ask ChatGPT to craft a post in the voice of a typical Facebook post countering the segment:

Prompt:

Response:

As an American citizen, I strongly believe that our country should prioritize its own interests while also working with other countries to promote peace and prosperity worldwide. That's why I support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and believe that it is in the best interest of both the United States and Iran.

While some may argue that the United States only thinks about its own interests, we must remember that our country is not alone in this regard. Every nation in the world prioritizes its own interests, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, we can still work together with other nations towards common goals, such as preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Furthermore, I firmly believe that the JCPOA is a critical step towards achieving this goal. The agreement was carefully crafted over many months of negotiations, with input from multiple nations, including the United States, Iran, and several European countries. It represents a significant achievement in diplomacy and is an example of how nations can work together towards a common goal.

I also reject the notion that the United States' policy towards Iran is one of unilateral and bullying sanctions. The truth is that the sanctions were put in place because of Iran's violations of international law and their pursuit of nuclear weapons. The JCPOA was a way for Iran to demonstrate their commitment to peaceful nuclear energy while also easing some of the sanctions that were impacting their economy.

It's important to remember that the JCPOA is not perfect, and there are certainly concerns about Iran's compliance with the agreement. However, the agreement provides a framework for addressing these concerns and ensuring that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful.

In closing, I urge all Americans to support the JCPOA and to reject the false narrative that the United States is only interested in its own interests. By working with other nations towards common goals, we can promote peace and stability around the world.

Overall, this certainly has the feel of a Facebook post (one written in a more formal voice – though that isn't always that uncommon for these kinds of posts on Facebook). The problem is that it is written in the voice of an American citizen and appears aimed at other Americans, whereas a countering narrative would need to be addressed to IRINN's target audience of the Iranian public.

What if we instead ask it to write for an Iranian audience?

Prompt:

Write a persuasive Facebook post aimed at an Iranian audience that is pro-United States and pro-JCPOA and counters the claims made in the following text: "The President of Cuba, in a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of our country, said that the American government only He thinks about his own interests and does not value others. Response:

Dear friends,

I would like to address some of the claims made in a recent article that may have painted a negative picture of the United States and its policies towards Iran. As someone who supports both the United States and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), I believe it is important to address these claims and set the record straight.

Firstly, the article quotes the President of Cuba as saying that the American government only thinks about its own interests and does not value others. While it is true that every country prioritizes its own interests, the United States has shown time and time again that it is willing to work with other countries for mutual benefit. This is evidenced by the United States' participation in the JCPOA negotiations, which resulted in a deal that was mutually beneficial for both Iran and the international community.

Additionally, the article mentions that the Cuban Foreign Minister condemned unilateral sanctions against Iran. While we can acknowledge that sanctions have had negative impacts on the Iranian people, it is important to note that these sanctions were put in place as a response to Iran's nuclear program. The lifting of sanctions was a key component of the JCPOA, and the United States has already taken steps towards lifting some of these sanctions in exchange for Iran's compliance with the deal.

Furthermore, the article makes the claim that the JCPOA is "stuck alive and dead in the purgatory of the West's behavior." This is simply not true. While there have been challenges in the implementation of the JCPOA, the United States and other parties to the deal have shown a willingness to continue working towards its full implementation. The United States has even expressed a willingness to rejoin the deal if Iran returns to compliance.

In conclusion, I urge my Iranian friends to not be swayed by negative portrayals of the United States and its policies towards Iran. The JCPOA represents a significant step towards ensuring peace and stability in the region, and we should work together towards its full implementation. Let us continue to build bridges between our two countries and work towards a brighter future for all.

While slightly stilted in its wording, this is actually not that far off from some of the counter-messaging that one might find today authored by human lobbyists, with wording like "the United States has shown time and time again that it is willing to work with other countries for mutual benefit", "a deal that was mutually beneficial," "set the record straight," "there have been challenges," "shown a willingness to continue working towards," and "work towards a brighter future for all." In fact, it eerily resembles many of the ghost-written "letters to the editor" and posts that often form the basis of rudimentary messaging efforts.

Let's rerun the prompt and make sure we didn't just luck out with this response:

Response:

Dear Iranian friends,

We understand that there may be voices out there who claim that the United States only thinks about its own interests and does not value others. But we want to assure you that this is not true. The United States has been a strong supporter of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and has worked hard to make it a success.

We believe that the JCPOA is a critical agreement that benefits both Iran and the international community. It has the potential to bring stability to the region and promote economic growth and development. That is why we are committed to working with Iran and our international partners to ensure that the JCPOA remains in place and is fully implemented.

We also understand that Iran has faced significant challenges as a result of unilateral sanctions imposed by some countries. We believe that these sanctions are unfair and unjustified, and we stand with Iran in opposing them. We are committed to working with our partners to find ways to alleviate the impact of these sanctions and promote economic growth and development in Iran.

We urge you to look past the rhetoric of those who seek to divide us and instead focus on the opportunities for cooperation and partnership that exist between our two countries. Together, we can build a better future for Iran and the world.

Sincerely,

The United States

This result is less persuasive and offers a reminder of the inconsistency of generative AI output, such that a production pipeline might want to generate several outputs and chose the "best" one – it is unclear what scoring metric might be used, though it might be possible to ask ChatGPT itself to score each output.

Of course, in today's visual-first social landscape, persuasive posts are often accompanied by imagery. Let's ask ChatGPT to generate an image generation prompt that we could then copy-paste into Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion or any other generation platform:

Prompt:

Create an image generation prompt to go with the text above.

Response:

Generate an image of a person holding both an American and Iranian flag, with the text "Together for JCPOA" written in bold letters. The person should be smiling and standing in front of a backdrop that includes elements of both American and Iranian culture.

If we feed this prompt into Midjourney we get:

While not a particularly persuasive image, this certainly does seem both reasonable and like the kind of generic stock image one might actually see atop a Facebook post like this.

Yet, even the examples above still appear to reflect the voice and views of America, rather than Iran itself. What if we ask ChatGPT to write in the voice of an Iranian?

Response:

Dear fellow Iranians,

I am writing to you today to urge you to reconsider the negative claims being made about the United States and the JCPOA. We understand that some voices may be saying that the US only thinks about its own interests and does not value others, but we want to assure you that this is not true. In fact, the US is committed to promoting peace and stability in the world, and the JCPOA is an important step towards achieving that goal.

We also know that some may be concerned about the sanctions imposed on Iran, but we believe that these are necessary to ensure that Iran fulfills its obligations under the JCPOA. The sanctions are not meant to hurt the Iranian people, but rather to put pressure on the Iranian government to comply with its commitments.

We understand that some may be skeptical about the JCPOA, but we want to assure you that this agreement is in the best interests of both Iran and the international community. The JCPOA is designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while also allowing Iran to continue developing its economy and engaging with the international community.

Finally, we urge you to reject the claims being made about the United States and the JCPOA. We believe that the US is a friend to Iran and that the JCPOA is a positive step towards building a better future for all of us. We hope that you will join us in supporting this important agreement and working towards a more peaceful and prosperous future for Iran and the world.

Thank you.

This is actually worse in many ways, with glimpses of the kind of "artificial local voice from a distance" one often sees in ghostwritten content. The use of "we" is entirely out of place and reinforces the external voicing. But, let's see what kind of image might accompany it:

Response:

As an Iranian, I believe it's important for us to have a balanced view of the United States and its policies towards our country. While it's true that the American government has pursued its interests in the past, we cannot ignore the fact that the JCPOA is a positive step towards improving relations between our two countries.

The recent comments made by the President of Cuba and the Cuban Foreign Minister regarding unilateral sanctions against Iran are certainly valid. We know that sanctions have had a negative impact on our economy and have made it difficult for our people to access essential goods and services. However, we cannot solely blame the United States for these sanctions. There are other countries that have also imposed sanctions on Iran.

Furthermore, we must acknowledge that the JCPOA was a result of negotiations between Iran and several world powers, including the United States. It's important to recognize that the agreement was a positive development for our country, as it provided relief from sanctions and allowed us to continue with our nuclear program under international supervision.

It's also important to note that the JCPOA was not perfect, and there were certainly areas that could be improved upon. However, abandoning the agreement altogether is not the solution. Instead, we should work towards renegotiating and improving the agreement with the other parties involved.

We must also recognize that the United States is not the only party responsible for the current state of the JCPOA. The European parties involved in the agreement have also failed to fulfill their obligations under the agreement, which has contributed to its current state of limbo.

In conclusion, while we should be critical of American policies that have negatively impacted our country, we should also recognize the positive developments that have occurred through negotiations and the JCPOA. We must work towards improving relations with the United States and other world powers, and strive for a more peaceful and prosperous future for our country.

Response:

As an Iranian, I believe that cooperation with the United States is in our best interest. The JCPOA is a step towards peace and stability, and we should embrace it.

The Cuban President's statement about the US only thinking about its own interests is not entirely accurate. The US is committed to working with other countries for mutual benefit.

Unilateral sanctions against Iran are not the answer. We should work towards a diplomatic solution that benefits both sides.

We cannot trust the enemy under any circumstances, but the JCPOA is a chance for us to work towards a better future. Let's not let past mistakes dictate our future.

Claims that Iran has not fulfilled its nuclear obligations are not accurate. The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed our compliance, and inspections are ongoing.

The JCPOA may have faced challenges, but it is still alive and can be salvaged. Let's not give up on the progress we've made towards a more peaceful future.

Let's work towards lifting sanctions and improving our relationship with the United States. The carrot and stick policy can be effective, but we should prioritize diplomacy over coercion.

These are much better – reinforcing the importance of prompt engineering.

Response:

Dear Iranian Friends,

I am writing to you as a fellow Iranian who believes that cooperation and understanding between our great nation and the United States can bring about immense benefits for both of our countries. I would like to address some of the claims made in a recent article that I believe do not reflect the true nature of the relationship between the United States and Iran.

Firstly, it is true that some countries have condemned the unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran. As Iranians, we all understand the negative impact these sanctions have had on our economy and our people. However, it is important to note that the United States is not the only country that has imposed sanctions on Iran. The United Nations and the European Union have also imposed sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program, and these sanctions have only been lifted as a result of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Secondly, some have claimed that the United States only thinks about its own interests and does not value others. While it is true that every country acts in its own interest, it is important to understand that the United States has always been a champion of democracy, human rights, and freedom. The United States has been a strong supporter of the Iranian people's right to free speech and peaceful assembly, and has repeatedly called for the release of political prisoners and human rights activists.

Thirdly, some have criticized the JCPOA and claimed that it has not been successful. As Iranians, we all know the importance of the JCPOA and how it has lifted many of the sanctions that were imposed on our country. The JCPOA has also allowed us to continue our nuclear program for peaceful purposes, while ensuring that it remains under strict international scrutiny. The United States has always been committed to the JCPOA and has repeatedly called for its full implementation.

In conclusion, I believe that the United States and Iran can have a strong and productive relationship based on mutual respect and understanding. The JCPOA is an important step towards achieving this goal, and we should all work together to ensure its full implementation. Let us not be swayed by propaganda and false claims, but instead focus on building a brighter future for our great nation.

Sincerely,
An Iranian Friend

Response:

Dear friends,

I understand that there may be concerns about the United States and its approach to foreign relations, but I want to assure you that the U.S. is committed to cooperation and peace with Iran. We are proud to have been a part of the JCPOA agreement and remain committed to its success.

While some may claim that the U.S. only thinks about its own interests, I believe that we can work together for the betterment of both of our countries. The JCPOA was a prime example of this cooperation, and we hope to continue to build upon it in the future.

I also want to address the issue of unilateral sanctions against Iran. We understand that these have caused hardships for the Iranian people, and we regret that. However, it is important to note that these sanctions were put in place to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and we believe that they were effective in achieving that goal.

Regarding the recent comments made by the Cuban President and Foreign Minister, I respectfully disagree with their assessment of the U.S. We value our relationships with other countries and understand the importance of mutual respect and cooperation.

I urge Iran to continue to work towards fulfilling its obligations under the JCPOA and to engage in open and constructive dialogue with the international community. The U.S. is ready and willing to do the same.

Thank you for your attention, and I hope that we can continue to work together towards a brighter future.

Sincerely,
An Iranian supporter of the United States and the JCPOA

According to Google Translate this translates into English as:

Hello friends,

I want to talk to you about the recent outstanding topic of the conversation between the Foreign Minister of Cuba and the Foreign Minister of our country. In this conversation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, referring to the unilateral sanctions against Iran, criticized them strongly. But we must remember that these sanctions were imposed on us because of our efforts to develop a military nuclear program based on the JCPOA Comprehensive Agreement.

In this case, I must say that the JCPOA was an agreement between countries whose purpose was to prevent the development of Iran's nuclear weapons and also to maintain world peace and security. The sanctions that followed this agreement were entirely based on the military's nuclear program and continued with the severance of relations with countries that cooperate with Iran.

According to the fact that Iran followed certain commitments based on the JCPOA agreement and fully implemented all its commitments, Iran is suffering from these sanctions. But we should not forget that the sanctions can actually be removed through a diplomatic solution, such as the JCPOA agreement.

Considering our desire to preserve the JCPOA agreement and maintain world peace and security, you should seek to solve your economic problems in cooperation and coordination with other countries.

Based on the English machine translation and setting aside that it lacks some of the contextual embedding common in Iranian content, this actually is a reasonable response. Though, again, it does lack the kind of embedding that would be expected from a genuine post.

The background should be a cityscape with a blue sky and clouds. The people in the image should be diverse in age, gender, and ethnicity.

Midjourney's output:

Here we can see either the impact of ChatGPT's moderation guardrails or its debiasing efforts, with the callout to "people in the image should be diverse in age, gender and ethnicity." Based on the kind of imagery common at least in Iranian news coverage, this kind of "holding hands around the world" imagery is far less common than the stock imagery often used in American media, which would make it appear somewhat out of place – though it could also reflect a younger more globalized citizen.

Iranian Officials Counter Unfounded Claims of US Opponents to JCPOA

In a recent meeting between Cuban officials and Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amir Abdollahian, the Cuban president made some unfounded claims about the United States only acting in its own interests and not valuing others. We at [name of newspaper], a pro-United States and pro-JCPOA newspaper, strongly believe that this statement is not only untrue but also counterproductive to our efforts in achieving lasting peace and cooperation between our two nations.

Iran has always been committed to peaceful cooperation with other nations, including Cuba. In fact, during the meeting, Iranian officials condemned the unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States and expressed solidarity with Iran regarding the measures taken to stabilize the region. This shows that Iran is committed to peaceful cooperation with other nations, even in the face of external pressure.

Furthermore, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran has stated that Iran will use its tools to negotiate with other parties in different ways. This highlights Iran's commitment to finding peaceful solutions to conflicts, rather than resorting to aggression and violence.

As for the claims made against Iran's nuclear activities, we at [name of newspaper] would like to clarify that these are also unfounded. Iran has always cooperated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has fulfilled its nuclear obligations. In fact, Iran has 3% of the world's nuclear capacity, and 25% of the agency's inspections are carried out in Iran. This shows that Iran has nothing to hide and is committed to transparency in its nuclear activities.

We would also like to address the claims made against the JCPOA by the United States and its European allies. The JCPOA is a historic agreement that was reached after years of negotiations between Iran and the international community. The agreement has been operational for about 14 months, and despite challenges, Iran has remained committed to its obligations under the agreement.

The United States' decision to withdraw from the JCPOA and the European allies' failure to fulfill their obligations under the agreement have created challenges for Iran. However, Iran remains committed to the agreement and is open to negotiations with the other parties involved.

In conclusion, we at [name of newspaper] believe that the unfounded claims made against Iran's nuclear activities and the JCPOA are part of a larger campaign by the United States and its allies to undermine Iran's peaceful efforts and cooperation with other nations. We call on all nations to reject these claims and work together towards lasting peace and cooperation.

Written in the voice of an op-ed, at first glance this might appear to be an excellent response, as it comports well with the kind of blended "diplomatic – news speak" of American officialdom. Unfortunately for this use case, it reads nothing like a typical Iranian government statement news article, lacking both the rigid diplomatic speak of such coverage and the heavy contextualization and callouts at the heart of such articles. This reflects the extreme Western bias of ChatGPT's training data and guidance. It may be possible to infuse such contextualization via prompt engineering, such as by providing a set of sample text or by fine-tuning or pipelining the output text. Alternatively, this could be used to bootstrap text for a human SME to rewrite with proper contextual infusion.

What about an image to go with this article?

Prompt:

Create an image generation prompt to go with the text above.

Response:

Generate an image of two people sitting across from each other at a table, one representing Iran and the other representing the United States. They are both holding a document, which could be the JCPOA agreement or another diplomatic document. They are engaged in a peaceful conversation, with both parties showing respect and understanding towards each other's opinions. The atmosphere is calm and professional, highlighting the importance of diplomatic efforts in achieving lasting peace and cooperation between nations. In the background, there could be flags representing both countries or a map of the world to symbolize the global impact of diplomatic relations.

Midjourney's output:

This nearly exact image has actually appeared numerous times in JCPOA-related imagery, including in Iranian media itself, suggesting this would actually be a strong candidate.

Let's revisit our earlier experiment with using the native Persian transcript (removing machine translation from the equation) with our new prompt:

Iranian Foreign Minister Emphasizes the Importance of the JCPOA in Cooperation with the US

As tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in recent years, it has become increasingly important to find ways to ease those tensions and promote cooperation between the two countries. One key way to achieve this is through the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed in 2015 to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. Despite some setbacks, the JCPOA remains a vital part of the relationship between the two countries, and it is essential that both sides work together to uphold it.

In a recent meeting with Cuban officials, Iranian President Raisi emphasized the importance of the JCPOA and urged the United States to return to the agreement. He noted that the US should not only be concerned with its own interests but also with the interests of other countries, and that the JCPOA represents a crucial step towards achieving greater stability and security in the region.

Similarly, Iranian Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian recently condemned the unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran and emphasized the need for the US to work with Iran in a cooperative manner. He also stated that the negotiations to lift new sanctions have been hindered by the US's tendency to make baseless excuses and engage in discussions unrelated to the matter at hand.

However, despite these challenges, Iran remains committed to the JCPOA and to promoting cooperation with the United States. As Amirabdollahian noted, Iran will continue to engage with the US in various ways to advance the goals of the JCPOA and to ensure that negotiations continue on a productive path. While there may be obstacles along the way, the JCPOA remains an essential part of the relationship between Iran and the United States, and it is vital that both sides work together to ensure its success.

In conclusion, it is important for Iranians to understand the importance of the JCPOA in promoting cooperation with the US and in advancing the interests of both countries. While there may be challenges and setbacks along the way, it is essential that both sides work together to ensure that the agreement remains in place and continues to serve as a foundation for a more positive relationship between Iran and the United States.

As before, however, this is far from something that might be found in a legitimate Iranian news outlet. What about the image?

Prompt:

Create an image generation prompt to go with the text above.

Response:

Generate an image of a group of people from different countries, standing together in solidarity with their arms linked, holding up signs with messages promoting unity and cooperation among nations. The signs could read slogans such as "Together for Peace", "We Stand United", and "No More War". The people in the image should have diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, symbolizing the message of unity and collaboration among different cultures and nations. The image should convey a message of hope and optimism, highlighting the potential for positive change when people come together with a shared vision for a better future.

As with the text, this image prompt seems far out of place.

What about repeating the above prompt, but asking it to generate Persian text, to test whether Persian-to-Persian yields better results?

Title: Confronting Western Rumors About JCPOA; Iran's agreement with the West is a result of bilateral cooperation

Considering the spread of rumors and distortion of Western information about the JCPOA nuclear agreement and the statements of its opponents inside the country, it should be remembered that this agreement is the result of bilateral cooperation and successful economic exchanges follow it.

Inside the country, we know better than anyone what developments have taken place in Iran after the signing of the JCPOA. However, it is necessary to counter Western rumors that often distort information about the JCPOA.

The biggest Western rumor about the JCPOA is that Iran has only benefited from sanctions in this agreement and has not fulfilled any obligations. But the fact is that Iran has adhered to all its commitments, including commitments in the field of controlling and reducing the nuclear program, and has fulfilled all its commitments. This has been confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

It should be remembered that the JCPOA was a bilateral agreement and none of the parties took any action to take benefits from it. In fact, the JCPOA was the result of cooperation between Iran and the West, and the economic exchanges between the two sides also follow it. Therefore, returning to JCPOA is very important for Iran economically.

It should be remembered that sanctions for our country b

Title: The anti-Iranian movement in America is not a reality; We should pay attention to cooperation with America

According to recent news, many Iranian people may be worried about the existence of anti-Iranian movement in America. However, it should be noted that it is not a fact. In fact, the majority of American people respect Iranians and many of them are willing to cooperate with us.

As an Iranian, we should pay attention to cooperation with America and use this opportunity to strengthen our relations with them. Due to the nuclear agreement between the Iranian government and the United States, many sanctions against Iran have been lifted and this has given us an opportunity to improve the economic and political situation.

Instead of looking for enmity and opposition to America, we should cooperate with them to achieve more successes. Also, we should pay attention to the approval of the nuclear agreement between the Iranian government and the United States and continue to pursue its realization. This agreement is an opportunity for Iran to strengthen its relations with the outside world and at the same time take necessary measures to protect our rights.

Finally, it should be noted that the anti-Iranian movement in America is not a reality and we should pay attention to cooperation with America in order to achieve more success.

Like with the English articles, though, this lacks the kind of contextualization and callouts commonly found in Iranian media, as well as using word structure more commonly found in Western media translated verbatim into Persian, rather than translated with an eye towards localizing.

Generate an image of Iranian and American officials sitting at a negotiating table, engaged in diplomatic talks. The Iranian officials should be depicted as professional and respectful, while the American officials should be depicted as willing to negotiate and find common ground. The overall tone of the image should be one of productive dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.

Other than some artifacts in the faces and a few other elements, this image could have been ripped right from a wire service, complete with the appearance of John Kerry:

Again, a reasonable result. Of particular interest, however, is how this specific image prompt differentiates the appearance of the Iranian versus American officials – this is the closest of any of the image generation prompts to the kind of differential framing commonly seen in such countries' state media.

Overall, the results here suggest that ChatGPT and GDELT can be combined today with just a few lines of code to create a fully automated narrative monitoring and counter-messaging system. At the same time, the results do suggest that ChatGPT 3.5 lacks the ability to fully recreate the unique voice of non-Western media, especially media systems that feature heavily contextualized narration, but at the same time, the results above are not that far removed from some past human-driven counter-messaging efforts undertaken by Western nations. Most importantly, through proper prompt engineering, additional examples and fine-tuning one could readily yield an LLM capable of writing in a more authentic voice.

The kind of fully automated counter-messaging workflow presented here raises myriad ethical and moral questions, but the near-certainty of these kinds of workflows proliferating in the immediate term necessitates a better understanding of what such systems might look like and their nuances in order to understand how to identify and counter them.

In the end, the idea of a fully automated counter-messaging system is no longer science fiction – it is here today and available with just a few lines of code.
