Experiments With Detecting & Correcting AI Hallucination In Geographic Mapping

AI models have made immense strides in text rendering, with SOTA models producing flawless text rendering with the correct settings and prompting. Mapping, however, remains an unsolved challenge, with the propensity of AI models to introduce widespread hallucination when rendering geographic maps a major hurdle blocking their tremendous potential in producing instant beautiful publication-ready maps. With the major leaps in visual reasoning of recent AI models, is Gemini capable of reviewing a map and identifying those errors? In other words, if image models aren't yet capable of producing geographically accurate maps, can visual models at least catch those errors? Can a visual model go further and provide feedback to the image model to allow it to correct itself? It turns out that Gemini is quite strong at identifying and listing all of the labeling errors in an AI-generated map (though not perfectly), but despite extensive experimentation, we were not able to find a workflow that allowed an autonomous feedback loop from the vision model to the image model to correct the identified mistakes. At the very least, however, it appears that vision models are now strong enough to identify when a map has errors, meaning it could at least flag that a generated map has severe errors and point them out and even do so at scale, allowing bulk accuracy scanning of maps in high-volume automated image generation workflows where generated images might contain geographic elements.
