Climate Change Has Received Almost As Much News Coverage As Racism

From Jan. 2017 to May 22, 2020, climate change and the “climate crisis” was mentioned 1.02 times more in worldwide online news coverage monitored by GDELT than racism and police brutality. Within US media, racism received just 1.18 times more coverage than climate change over the same period. Since May 23, racism has received just 3.3 times more coverage than climate change in US media, showing that even in the midst of a nationwide discussion of race and policing with protests across the country, racism struggles for media attention compared to the media’s steady focus on climate change.
