ChatGPT Experiments: Summarizing An ABC Evening News Broadcast – Part 2

One of the primary challenges in our previous attempt to summarize an ABC Evening News broadcast and distill it into distinct stories was that the full transcript exceeds ChatGPT's input length limitation. Using the captioning mode information in the underlying TTXT file, we segment the transcript into chunks between commercial breaks, but unfortunately in this case the broadcast runs 17 minutes and 42 seconds before its first commercial break, which yields an uninterrupted chunk of text that is too long for ChatGPT to process.

As a workaround, we developed the following workflow:

This approach has the downside that it may split the transcript in a middle of a story (the transition from 0:00-5:00 to 5:00-10:00 might occur in the middle of a story), which would result in two chunks containing text about the same story. However, evening news broadcasts tend to interweave "teasers" about later stories throughout each broadcast, so this actually is not that dissimilar of a task from asking ChatGPT to summarize an entire transcript, since either way it will need to group together and weave story fragments into a unified narrative. Importantly, the final summarization task smooths these discontinuities together, since if a story is split across two chunks, this will piece them back together.

There are some edge cases that can occur, such as can be observed in the table at the end, where this multi-step process deprives the final summarization of enough detail about the New Jersey airport scare to yield a proper summary, but this could likely be improved with more advanced chunk splitting, such as using embeddings to compare the semantic similarity of each sentence to the one before it and split chunks between the most dissimilar sentences, rather than a hard 5-minute segmentation.

Despite these limitations, the end results are quite extraordinary. You can compare the results below with the original broadcast transcript and Vanderbilt Television News Archive's human-analyzed story segmentation of the broadcast.

Response:

A brutal arctic front with snow squalls is pushing through the Northeast, causing concern for hypothermia, frostbite, and power outages. Doctors warn that hypothermia can set in quickly. Winds are already gusting over 40 mph, with wind chill advisories in effect for much of the region north of New York City. The morning will bring even more dangerous temperatures, with blizzard warnings in effect for some areas. There will be a rapid rebound in temperatures over the next three days, but people are advised to take the next 36 hours seriously. Meanwhile, in California, an emergency room doctor was struck by a car and then attacked with a knife by the driver. The doctor later died at the hospital. The suspect has been charged with murder and the use of a deadly weapon. Also, two passenger jets at Newark airport had a scare when they clipped wings while one was getting ready to take off.

Leisure and hospitality is the strongest sector, adding over 100,000 jobs, as people continue to spend money on travel and dining out. Professional, government and healthcare jobs are also holding strong despite layoffs at tech companies. The report suggests that the Federal Reserve's eight consecutive interest rate hikes have not led to any kind of recession or instability in the economy, and the Fed is expected to continue raising interest rates. On the other hand, the trial of Alex Murdaugh, who is accused of murdering his wife and son, continues to unfold. The defense is pushing for the murder weapon to be ruled out, and the judge is deciding whether to allow evidence of Murdaugh's financial crimes and greed to be heard by the jury. President Biden has been presented with options for taking action against the balloon, including military action, but initially ruled out the possibility due to concerns over civilian risk. However, the option may be back on the table as the balloon is expected to linger above America for a few days and the U.S. may wait for it to drift over the Atlantic Ocean and then shoot it down once it's over U.S. territorial waters to avoid civilian injuries and retrieve the balloon. The President is being regularly briefed on the situation. The long-time housekeeper of Murdaugh died in a fall at the family's home and her family didn't know about the $4 million insurance payout until after the murders. Robin Roberts took a deep breath and took a leap of faith in the birthplace of bungee jumping, New Zealand. The video showed her taking a sky jump in Auckland, conquering her fear and "living more and fearing less."
