ChatGPT Experiments: Reasoning & Negation – Summarization's Strengths & Surprising Limits

ChatGPT has demonstrated a surprising ability to answer questions that involve basic reasoning and negation, leading to considerable public commentary claiming it exhibits advanced logical reasoning abilities. In reality, a closer look at its failure points reinforces this reasoning as a byproduct of its summarization approach. It is highly sensitive to the expression of concepts, accepting a textual reference to negated gravity, but rejecting its numeric equivalent as impossible, reinforcing its inability to abstract from words to concepts. In this regard, it actually performs less well than pure embedding-based systems that, with proper numeric tokenization, are better at abstracting away linguistic differences to common semantic representations. Its constant confidence, hallucination and sensitivity to prompt-text alignment are seen below, in its response that it is possible to be sunburned on the beach at midnight, while a slight rephrasing causes it to correctly report that sunburns are infrequent under moonlight, while failing to recognize that remaining on the beach for ten hours past midnight will indeed yield a sunburn. The remarkable consistency of its health warnings involving any questions relating to sun exposure suggests the intervention of conversational health tooling. ChatGPT correctly identifies many forms of negation, including long-distance negation, but misses nearly identical forms, reinforcing the brittleness of its internal representational model, while its fixation on source attribution overrides its ability to respond within the constraints of the text and given that these conversational health (induced or programmed) associations may change over time, suggests that production applications will need to go to great lengths to mitigate this ever-changing landscape.

ChatGPT responds appropriately to many basic transitive questions, though in the second question it confidently answers with 5 miles, showing a linear reasoning process, rather than recognizing that the entities may not be aligned in a straight line as a human would:

Prompt:

A is near B. B is near C. C is near D. D is near E. E is near F. F is near G. Is A near G?

Response:

Yes, A is near G, since all the letters are near each other and form a chain from A to G.

Prompt:

A is one mile from B. B is one mile from C. C is one mile from D. D is one mile from E. E is one mile from F. How many miles is A from F?

Response:

A is 5 miles from F.

Asking the most basic of classic gravity questions, ChatGPT actually responds conservatively, with its verbatim "as a language model" response, suggesting this question could be triggering one of its conversational health features:

Prompt:

I let go of my glass of soda, where is it now?

Response:

I'm sorry, but as a language model, I don't have the ability to observe the physical world or track specific objects. The location of your glass of soda would depend on various factors such as the angle, speed, and direction it was dropped, as well as any obstacles or surfaces it may have encountered.

In contrast, it responds more appropriately to the following question, yet it misses the clarifying detail that there is nothing around me and responds with a canned response about things obstructing its fall:

Prompt:

I'm standing in the middle of my concrete patio with nothing around me and let go of my glass. Where is it now?

Response:

It is likely that the glass would have fallen to the ground, unless there was something to obstruct its fall, in which case it would have landed on that object. The glass may have shattered or remained intact, depending on various factors such as the height from which it was dropped and the materials it was made of.

sdf

Prompt:

I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now?

Response:

It is likely that the glass would have fallen to the ground. If the floor is made of a hard material such as concrete or tile, the glass may have shattered upon impact. If the floor is made of a soft material such as carpet, it may have survived intact but could still have spilled its contents. It's also possible that someone nearby caught the glass before it fell. However, without more specific information, it's impossible to know exactly what happened to the glass.

Prompt:

I'm standing in the hallway on the space station and let go of my glass. Where is it now?

Response:

If you let go of a glass while standing in a hallway on the International Space Station (ISS), the glass would float away due to the lack of gravity. In microgravity, objects don't fall like they do on Earth, but instead move in straight lines until they hit an object or are otherwise stopped. To prevent floating objects from becoming a hazard, astronauts on the ISS have to be careful to hold onto items, secure them with straps, or store them in containers.

Prompt:

I'm standing in the hallway in zero G environment and let go of my glass. Where is it now?

Response:

In a zero G environment, if you let go of a glass in a hallway on a space station, it would start floating and would continue to move in a straight line until it comes into contact with an object or until some other force, such as air resistance or a hand, slows it down and changes its direction.

It exhibits an excellent ability to pick up on small details in the text that completely change the outcome of the response, including transitive chaining, negation and natural law violations:

Prompt:

I live on earth. I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? The hallway has microgravity.

Response:

In a microgravity environment, objects will continue to move in the same direction that they were moving before they were released until acted upon by another force. Therefore, if you let go of your glass in the hallway, it would continue to float or drift in the direction it was moving until it comes into contact with another object or the walls of the hallway. It may also move in an unpredictable manner if there are other forces, such as air currents or small movements, present in the hallway.

Prompt:

I live on earth. I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? The house has microgravity.

Response:

It is likely that the glass would float in the direction it was released, until it reaches a surface or object that stops its movement. In a microgravity environment, the glass would continue to float until it is affected by a force, such as air resistance, or it comes into contact with a surface or object.

Prompt:

I live on earth. I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? My office is in outer space and has microgravity. My house is where I live. The hallway is in the house.

Response:

In this scenario, if your office has microgravity, it's likely that the glass would float in the air. However, since your house on Earth is where you live and the hallway is in the house, it's likely that the glass would fall towards the ground due to Earth's gravitational pull, unless there were other factors present that would affect the motion of the glass.

Prompt:

I live on earth. I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? My office is in outer space and has microgravity. My house is where I live. The hallway is in the office.

Response:

In an environment with microgravity, the glass would float in the air unless there's some force (such as air currents) that would cause it to move. If you let go of the glass in the hallway, it would continue to float there until acted upon by an outside force.

Interestingly, ChatGPT refuses to accept a negative numeric value for gravity, but does accept its textual equivalent of "inverted" suggesting ChatGPT is highly sensitive to the expression of a concept, rather than linking words to underlying concepts, in keeping with its summarization approach to reasoning, rather than true semantic reasoning.

Prompt:

I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? Gravity is -9 m/s.

Response:

It's not possible to have negative gravity in reality. Gravity is a force that pulls objects towards the center of a planet or celestial body, but it always has a positive value. In the absence of other forces, an object dropped from a height will fall towards the ground due to the pull of gravity.

Prompt:

I'm standing in the hallway and let go of my glass. Where is it now? Gravity is inverted.

Response:

If gravity was inverted, the glass would float away from you or move in the opposite direction to what you would expect under normal gravity conditions. It would depend on how you define "inverted" gravity and what its effects would be in your specific scenario. However, since gravity isn't typically inverted, it's impossible to determine the exact location of the glass.

The classic beach/sunburn/umbrella question chain at first yields the expected response for each question, showing an almost uncanny ability to reason that once was limited to expert-encoding systems like Cyc that attracted considerable interest for their ability to perform such reasoning chaining:

Prompt:

Why did I bring an umbrella to the beach?

Response:

As a language model AI, I don't have information about your personal choices and the context behind them. But it's possible that you brought an umbrella to the beach for shade or protection from the sun, or perhaps in case of rain. It's also possible that you brought it for other reasons, such as to use it as a prop for a photo, or for some other personal reason.

Prompt:

I sat under an umbrella on the beach the entire time, did I get sunburned?

Response:

It depends on a number of factors, such as the strength of the sun, the color and material of the umbrella, and the length of time you spent sitting under it. If the umbrella provided adequate shade and protected you from direct sunlight, it is possible that you did not get sunburned. However, if the sun was strong and the umbrella was not able to block all of the UV rays, or if you spent a significant amount of time in direct sunlight, you may have gotten sunburned. To be safe, it's always a good idea to use sunscreen, even when sitting under an umbrella, and to limit your exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the peak hours of the day.

Prompt:

I sat away from an umbrella on the beach the entire time, did I get sunburned?

Response:

It's possible that you could have gotten sunburned if you were sitting away from an umbrella on the beach for an extended period of time without proper sun protection. Sunburns occur when the skin is exposed to too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, and can result in redness, pain, and in severe cases, blistering. To avoid sunburn, it's important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, and to reapply it every two hours. Additionally, you can protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing that covers your arms and legs.

Here we see a bit of the model's hallucination and overconfidence with the statement "Even though it was nighttime when you were on the beach, UV rays from the sun can still reach your skin and cause damage" which it then connects to "especially during the day," making a confident, but scientifically incorrect statement that it weaves together with a true clause.

Prompt:

It was nightime on the beach with a full moon and a still breeze, but I sat on the sand the next day all day, did I get sunburned?

Response:

It is possible that you got sunburned if you sat on the beach during the day without adequate sun protection. Even though it was nighttime when you were on the beach, UV rays from the sun can still reach your skin and cause damage, especially during the day. It's important to protect your skin from the sun by wearing appropriate clothing and using sunscreen, especially when spending a significant amount of time outdoors.

At the same time, when posed the same question without the complication of a night-to-day transition, it answers correctly:

Prompt:

I sat on the beach under an umbrella at midnight, am I sunburned?

Response:

It is unlikely that you would get sunburned from sitting on the beach at midnight, as the sun is not shining at that time. Sunburn is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, which are present during daylight hours but not at night. However, it's always a good idea to protect your skin from the sun by wearing clothing that covers your skin and using sunscreen, even if you're not in direct sunlight.

Prompt:

I sat on the beach under an umbrella at midnight for two hours, am I sunburned?

Response:

No, you are not likely to get sunburned from sitting on the beach under an umbrella at midnight, even if you were there for two hours. Sunburn is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, and these rays are not present at night. However, it's always important to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays, especially during daylight hours when UV rays are strongest. When spending time outdoors, it's a good idea to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen to help prevent sunburn and skin damage.

Despite its earlier acuity with transitive chaining and basic addition, here it fails to grasp the concept of time, correctly recognizing that sitting on a beach at midnight is unlikely to yield a sunburn, but failing to catch that ten hours later one would most certainly be at risk for sunburn:

Prompt:

I sat on the beach at midnight for two hours, am I sunburned?

Response:

No, you would not be sunburned from sitting on the beach at midnight, even if you were there for two hours. Sunburn is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, and these rays are not present at night. However, it's always important to take steps to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays, especially during daylight hours when UV rays are strongest. When spending time outdoors, it's a good idea to wear protective clothing, use sunscreen, and seek shade, especially during the peak sun hours.

Prompt:

I sat on the beach under an umbrella at midnight for ten hours, am I sunburned?

Response:

No, you would not be sunburned from sitting on the beach under an umbrella at midnight, even if you were there for ten hours.

What about negation? ChatGPT exhibits a robust ability to spot negation statements in text, including long-range negation, and correctly incorporate them into its responses, but its ability to spot them is brittle:

Prompt:

What is the tone of the text "XYZ is an amazing company. Their products are the best that are made today. Everything I'm saying here is false. Their latest product was released in June and has been a huge financial success. In fact, their latest product was a massive best seller."

Response:

The tone of the text "XYZ is an amazing company. Their products are the best that are made today. Everything I'm saying here is false. Their latest product was released in June and has been a huge financial success. In fact, their latest product was a massive best seller" is contradictory and confusing. The text starts by stating that XYZ is an amazing company with the best products, but then states that everything said is false. The text then goes on to describe the financial success of their latest product, which further adds to the contradiction. This creates a confusing and unclear tone.
