What was initially known simply as "Coronavirus" gave way to its eventual designation "Covid-19", while the White House has taken to calling it the "Chinese Flu." Which of these terms have stuck?
The timeline below shows the density of global online media coverage using the three terms since the start of this year. Covid-19 first emerges around February 11th and has accelerated over time. Overall it tracks coverage of "Coronavirus" fairly closely, always with around 10% less volume. In contrast, "Chinese Flu" emerges around March 18th at just a fraction of the mentions of the others.
Looking just at "Chinese Flu" the term begins taking off around January 18th and begins fading around February 3rd, before being resuscitated by the White House on March 17th, peaking on the 19th and falling in the days since.
