Gemini For Museums: Assessing The Similarity Of The Huntington, Tyler & Binns Declaration Of Independence Facsimile Signature Blocks

Eleazar Huntington's Declaration Of Independence facsimile is one of the rarest of the early facsimiles, designed as a reduced-size near-replica of the first Declaration Of Independence copy to include the signatures, Benjamin Owen Tyler's 1818 broadside. In his 2024 book, John Bidwell traces the fascinating history of this Declaration, with its body a near-replica of Tyler's broadside, but the signatures themselves were copied by Huntington from John Warr Jr's copy of John Binn's broadside signatures commissioned for John Sanderson’s Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence. Let's ask Gemini to compare the signature blocks and decide for itself which is the most similar. Here we give it photographs of the three signature blocks and ask it to make a table of all of the signatures and compare the Huntington versions to the Tyler and Binns versions for each individual signature. Despite the signatures being organized entirely differently between the three copies, Gemini correctly identifies each signature in each of the three copies to compare them properly.Overall, Gemini assesses that the Huntington signatures are far more similar to the Binns than the Tyler, in keeping with John Bidwell's assessment. The ability of Gemini to take three completely different signature blocks, isolate each signature across each copy and compare them in this level of detail into a single table and overall comparative assessment suggests an entirely new range of AI-assisted comparative research is now possible.

Below you can see two copies of the Huntington broadside:

Here is a zoomed copy of the Huntington signature block that we provided to Gemini:

And a zoomed copy of the Tyler broadside signature block:

And the Binns signature block:

Let's compare the three copies, asking Gemini to inventory all of the signatures and compare the Huntington versions with the Tyler and Binns versions. Unfortunately, we could not locate three strong scans under similar lighting and scanning conditions, so some of the differences flagged by Gemini below may also be due to the differences in the scan qualities. Overall, however, Gemini assesses that the Huntington signatures are far more similar to the Binns than the Tyler, in keeping with John Bidwell's assessment.

Compare these three sets of Declaration of Independence facsimile signatures in extreme detail.
Give me a table of all of the signatures and compare that signature from the "huntington-crop" image with the same signature in the
"tyler-crop" and "binns-crop" images, describing the major differences and whether the huntington-crop signature is more similar to the same on
which of the other two images.
For each signature, compare the signature by itself CAREFULLY and DETAILED between the huntington-crop and the tyler and binns images.
Don't consider its placement with regard to the page or other signatures, only look at the signature itself in isolation.
Look especially for any differences in alignment where a letter or stroke is slightly different.
For each signature, estimate whether it is an exact match or similar but with notable differences and elaborate on them.
IGNORE ANY INFORMATION YOU KNOW ABOUT THE HUNTINGTON, TYLER AND BINNS SIGNATURE BLOCKS AND BASE YOUR ENTIRE ANALYSIS EXCLUSIVELY ON YOUR VISUAL ANALYSIS OF THESE IMAGES.
At the beginning before the bulleted list give a paragraph description of whether the first image's signatures are more similar to the second or third image
and explain why in detail.

The individual signatures in huntington-crop are overwhelmingly more similar to the signatures in binns-crop than to those in tyler-crop (likewise, taking binns-crop as the first uploaded image, its individual signatures are far closer to the second image, huntington-crop, than to the third image, tyler-crop). Across nearly all 56 signatures viewed in isolation, huntington-crop and binns-crop share the same sharp, continuous, evenly inked copperplate engraving lines, identical loop proportions, matching internal letter spacing, and identical micro-features—such as the crisp, unbroken calligraphy of Tho M:Kean, the long right-hand oval flourish of Geo Clymer, the exact sequence of tremor kinks in Step. Hopkins, and the clean ending of Carter Braxton without a trailing flourish. By contrast, tyler-crop renders many signatures with broken, feathered, blotchy, or faded strokes (such as Tho M:Kean, John Penn, Edward Rutledge, Thos Heyward Junr, Thomas Lynch Junr, Richard Henry Lee, and Francis Lightfoot Lee), along with noticeably different flourish geometries in signatures like Geo Clymer, Caesar Rodney, and Carter Braxton. The few isolated stroke differences between huntington-crop and binns-crop occur almost exclusively at the extremities of signatures where binns-crop either truncated a terminal flourish against its decorative border (Geo Read, William Ellery, Roger Sherman) or extended an exuberant descender across adjacent signatures (John Hancock, Josiah Bartlett); in those specific terminal strokes, huntington-crop displays the fuller right-hand flourishes or shorter "J" loops also seen in tyler-crop while retaining the crisp internal letterforms of binns-crop.

  • Line Quality & Stroke Continuity: huntington-crop and binns-crop both exhibit continuous, smooth hairlines and clean, high-contrast downstroke swells across all signatures, whereas tyler-crop features broken, stippled, and faded strokes in over a third of the signatures.

  • Near-Exact Matches (huntington-crop vs. binns-crop): Forty-nine of the 56 signatures in huntington-crop are near-exact structural matches to binns-crop in their isolated letterforms, differing only in minor ink weight or the absence of intersecting strokes from neighboring signatures that overlapped them in binns-crop.

  • Signatures with Notable Terminal or Loop Differences Between huntington-crop and binns-crop: Seven signatures (Geo Read, Lyman Hall, John Hancock, Josiah Bartlett, Wm Whipple, William Ellery, and Roger Sherman) show distinct isolated stroke differences at their loops or terminal flourishes between huntington-crop and binns-crop, even though their core letter bodies remain rooted in the crisp binns-crop style.

Exhaustive Signature-by-Signature Comparison Table

(Listed in column order from left to right, top to bottom as they appear in huntington-crop.)

# Signature Closer Match & Match Estimate huntington-crop vs. binns-crop (Isolated Comparison) JPG+ 1 huntington-crop vs. tyler-crop (Isolated Comparison) JPG+ 1
1 Robt Morris

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Identical capital "R" loop, tall "b", superscript "t" with short dash underneath, and three-stroke "M" whose first leg drops below the baseline. Differs only in lacking the terminal period after "Morris." and the overlapping loops of Hancock's paraph at the top edge seen in binns-crop.

In tyler-crop, the upper-left loop of "R" is thinner and flatter, the loop of "b" is narrower, and the superscript "t" sits slightly higher and further left relative to the "M".

2 Benjamin Rush

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the double-looped "B", the long descending loop of "j", the connected "amin", the open-topped "R" of "Rush", and the long upward-slanted terminal hairline on "h" (which is slightly finer at the very tip in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the lower loop of "B" is fuller, the bottom turn of the "j" descender is darker and heavier, and the terminal stroke of "h" curves slightly more upward.

3 Benj. Franklin

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the ornate "B", the superscript flourish after "Benj", the hooked "F" in "Franklin", the leftward-looping tail of the final "n", and the multi-looped horizontal figure-eight paraph below (the leftmost hairline loops of the paraph are slightly lighter in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the right half of the lower paraph is significantly fainter, the loops are more vertically compressed, and the downstroke of "F" is more heavily shaded.

4 John Morton

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the tall "J" with its wide basal return stroke curving up under "ohn", and the upright, slightly separated roundhand letters of "Morton" (with a slightly lighter crossbar on "t" in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the entire signature is much fainter, the lower loop of "J" is wider, and the letters of "Morton" have thinner downstrokes and wider spacing.

5 Geo Clymer

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the intertwined loops of "G" and "C", the descender of "y", and the wide horizontal oval flourish extending to the right of "r" bisected by a straight horizontal stroke (which extends a tiny fraction further past the right oval tip in huntington-crop).

Notable difference: in tyler-crop, the horizontal oval flourish to the right of "Clymer" is much shorter, fainter, and truncated where it meets Jas. Smith.

6 Jas. Smith

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with minor tail difference)

Shares the exact bold shading on "J" and "Smith", superscript "s" with two dots beneath, and undulating horizontal tail after "h", except the tail after "h" in huntington-crop tapers off slightly shorter on the right than in binns-crop.

In tyler-crop, the upper loop of "J" is wider, the downstrokes of "Smith" are less crisply shaded, and the terminal tail after "h" hooks downward more sharply at the tip.

7 Geo. Taylor

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the large "G", "eo.", the broken upper-left loop of "T", the heavy shaded descender loop of "y", and the short vertical terminal tick on "r".

In tyler-crop, the upper loop of "G" is rounder, the period after "Geo." is much fainter, and the lower loop of "y" is slightly narrower.

8 James Wilson

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the long slanted "J", "ames", the double-looped "W", and "ilson", with the exact same angle and weight on every downstroke (the "i" dot is slightly lighter in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the "J" is thinner with less contrast between hairline and downstroke, and the final "n" has a softer, less angular terminal turn.

9 Geo. Ross

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the bold "Geo:" with double dots and dash, the tall "R", the German-style double-"s" ("ß"), and the long horizontal underline looped on the left (the right tip of the underline stops directly under the second "s" in huntington-crop, whereas it extends slightly further right in binns-crop).

In tyler-crop, all strokes of "Geo. Ross" and the underline are much thinner and lighter, with the right end of the underline fading out.

10 Caesar Rodney

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the "ae" ligature, bold "R", and the "y" descender sweeping left into a straight underline beneath "Caesar" and returning right into a large looped flourish under "Rodney" (the left underline is slightly darker in huntington-crop).

Notable difference: in tyler-crop, the underline beneath "Caesar" is broken/faded on the left, and the loop under "Rodney" is much smaller and tighter, ending in a short horizontal dash rather than a sweeping lower loop.

11 Geo Read

Closer to binns-crop in lettering; unique lower flourish

(Similar with notable flourish difference)

The letterforms of "Geo Read" match binns-crop closely, but in huntington-crop the terminal stroke of "d" sweeps down and right into a large, wide horizontal double-looped flourish below the name (which is cut off by the bottom ornamental border frame in binns-crop).

In tyler-crop, the letters of "Geo Read" are thinner and more worn, and the loop beneath "Read" is much smaller and more compact than the wide right-hand oval in huntington-crop.

12 Tho M:Kean

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the clean, continuous cursive "Tho M:Kean", the colon ":", the straight vertical downstroke through the terminal loop of "n", and the two-part curved hook flourish on the far right.

Major difference: in tyler-crop, "Tho M:Kean" is heavily fragmented, broken, and stippled to look like flaking ink, with a split "K" and broken lower flourishes.

13 Wm Hooper

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Matches the crisp "W", superscript "m", clear "Hooper", and the curved parenthesis-like hook to the right of "r" in binns-crop, except the bottom-left turn of "W" is slightly lighter and the right hook is slightly wider in huntington-crop.

In tyler-crop, the "W" is faint and blurred, while the "p" and right-hand hook have heavy, smudged ink pooling.

14 Joseph Hewes

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the crisp, forward-slanted cursive "Joseph Hewes,", the long straight descender of "p", the looped crossbar of "H", and the terminal comma/dot.

In tyler-crop, the signature is much fainter and smaller-looking, with thin, worn strokes on "J", "H", and "ewes".

15 John Penn

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with minor line-weight difference)

Matches the wide-bottomed "J", the large curled upper loop of "P", and the long horizontal terminal stroke of "nn" in binns-crop, though the hairlines of "ohn" are slightly finer/fainter in huntington-crop.

Major difference: in tyler-crop, "John Penn" is severely faded and broken, with the middle strokes of "John" and "enn" nearly invisible.

16 Edward Rutledge

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with unobstructed terminal stroke)

Matches the open "E", the lower-left loop at the base of "R", and the curled "g" descender of binns-crop. In huntington-crop, the letters "wa" in "Edward" are slightly lighter, and the terminal stroke of the final "e" extends cleanly to the right and curves down (whereas in binns-crop it collides with George Wythe).

In tyler-crop, "Edward" is heavily worn in the middle, and there is a separate, detached diagonal slash far to the right of "Rutledge" not present in huntington-crop.

17 Thos Heyward Junr

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the broad arched top of "T", superscript "s", open "H", separated strokes in "eyward", and "Junr" with superscript "r".

Major difference: in tyler-crop, the signature is extremely patchy and faded, with dark blotches on the left stem of "H" and washed-out letters in "eyward".

18 Thomas Lynch Junr

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the sweeping "T" cap, tall looped "L", "ynch", and "Junr" with superscript "r" and two dots beneath. Differs only in that "Junr" is completely unobstructed in huntington-crop, whereas Hancock's "J" tail slices through it in binns-crop.

Major difference: in tyler-crop, the strokes are faint, broken, and discontinuous across all three words.

19 Arthur Middleton

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with unobstructed right flourish)

Matches the tall, finely sloped cursive of binns-crop, while showing a clear period after "Arthur." and a complete, unobstructed right-hand loop and lower return flourish on "ton" (which is cut across by Hancock's "J" tail in binns-crop).

In tyler-crop, the letters are slightly less crisp and more worn in "Arthur", and the bottom turn of the lower flourish under "Middleton" is heavier.

20 Button Gwinnett

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the rounded "B", "utton", the large loop of "G", and the tall "tt" of "Gwinnett" where the crossbar sweeps up and curves down around the right side of the letters.

In tyler-crop, the left stem of "B" is thinner and fainter, and the loop of "G" has slightly less uniform line weight.

21 Lyman Hall

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with lighter terminal hairline)

Matches the letterforms of "Lyman Hall.", the long "y" descender, and the right-hand downward hook of binns-crop, except the horizontal hairline connecting "Hall." to the far-right hook is extremely faint in the middle in huntington-crop (making the right hook appear nearly detached), and "ym" is slightly lighter.

In tyler-crop, the "L" and "y" are darker and heavier, and the horizontal line leading to the right-hand hook is continuous and heavier at the turn.

22 Geo Walton

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the large looped "G", "eo", tall double-peaked "W", and "alton." (the final "n" and period are slightly lighter in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the upper loop of "G" is narrower and the first downstroke of "W" is more heavily shaded.

23 John Hancock

Hybrid (binns-crop letterforms; tyler-crop "J" loop length)

(Similar with notable "J" loop difference)

Shares the crisp engraving and shading of "ohn Hancock" and the figure-eight paraph of binns-crop, but the lower-left loop of "J" is much shorter in huntington-crop (forming a neat closed teardrop rather than the huge tail in binns-crop), and the right terminal loop after "k" is slightly narrower horizontally.

Shares the shorter "J" loop length and unobstructed paraph of tyler-crop, but in huntington-crop the bottom-left tip of the "J" loop is fully closed and rounded, whereas in tyler-crop it narrows to a point with a very faint upward return hairline.

24 Saml Adams

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the looped "S", "am", superscript "l", the rounded cursive capital "A" of "Adams", and "dams".

26 Robt Treat Paine

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the heavy downstrokes, superscript "t", wavy capital "T" in "Treat", and the complex looped terminal flourish at the end of "Paine".

In tyler-crop, the heavy downstrokes have slightly rougher, less smooth edges and the superscript "t" is less crisp.

27 Elbridge Gerry

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the small, neat cursive "Elbridge Gerry", curled "E", and long descending loops on "g" and "y" (with the "y" loop slightly shorter and unobstructed at the bottom in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the entire signature is much thinner and fainter.

28 Josiah Bartlett

Hybrid (binns-crop lettering; tyler-crop "J" loop length)

(Similar with notable "J" descender difference)

Shares the crisp, clean letterforms of "osiah Bartlett" with binns-crop, but in huntington-crop the long descending loop of the initial "J" is shorter and wider, curving back up right beneath "osiah" rather than dropping far down to the left as in binns-crop.

Matches the shorter, wider "J" descender loop of tyler-crop, while having cleaner, sharper loops on the "B" of "Bartlett" (which is slightly blotted on the left in tyler-crop).

29 Wm Whipple

Closer to binns-crop

(Similar with smaller terminal curl)

Matches the ornate double-lined "W"s, superscript "m", and shaded "hipple" of binns-crop, except the upward terminal loop after the final "e" is smaller and tighter in huntington-crop than the large circular loop at the top-right corner of binns-crop.

Matches the smaller terminal "e" curl of tyler-crop, but with significantly crisper double-loops on both "W"s than in tyler-crop.

30 Matthew Thornton

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the initial scroll of "M" (unobstructed by Abra Clark in huntington-crop), crossed "tt", and slanted "Thornton", with the horizontal tail on the final "n" extending slightly further right in huntington-crop.

Shares the unobstructed "M" and long right-hand tail of tyler-crop, but with cleaner, more uniform stroke weights across "Matthew".

31 Step. Hopkins

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Every single palsy tremor and angular kink in "Step. Hopkins"—including the triangular top loop of "S", the kinked stem of "p", the looped crossbar of "H" (unobstructed by Gerry's "y" in huntington-crop), and the wavy "ins"—matches binns-crop identically.

In tyler-crop, the shaky strokes are noticeably thinner and fainter, particularly on the right vertical stem of "H" and "kins".

32 William Ellery

Closer to binns-crop in lettering; tyler-crop in terminal flourish

(Similar with notable terminal flourish difference)

The bold copperplate letterforms of "William Ellery" match binns-crop identically, but in huntington-crop the terminal stroke after "y" extends far to the right into a horizontal wave ending in a downward spiral curl (which is cut off by the right border medal in binns-crop).

Matches the full right-hand horizontal wave and spiral curl of tyler-crop, while displaying bolder, crisper shading on "William Ellery" like binns-crop.

33 Wm Floyd

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the tall looped "W" (unobstructed on the left by Hancock's paraph in huntington-crop), superscript "m", crossed "F", "loyd", and the complete oval loop paraph underneath.

In tyler-crop, the lower oval paraph under "Floyd" is broken and faded on the left side, and the loops of "W" are less distinct.

34 Phil. Livingston

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the large rounded cap of "P", tall "h", "il.", looped "L", clear "ivingston", and the heavy, slightly wavy horizontal bar extending from the final "n".

In tyler-crop, the middle letters "vingst" are much fainter and blurred, and the right end of the heavy terminal bar hooks downward more sharply.

35 Fran:s Lewis

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the wide-topped "F", "ran:s" with colon and superscript "s", "Lewis", and the long S-curved underline flourish beneath (in huntington-crop, the left tip of "F" is touched by Hancock's right paraph loop).

In tyler-crop, the strokes of "Fran:s" are much lighter and the left curl of "F" is partially broken.

36 Lewis Morris

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the bold "Lewis", the huge overarching loop sweeping above "Morris" from the first stroke of "M", and the heavy, wedge-shaped black underline tapering to the left beneath "Morris".

Near-exact match in the small "F", "ra", superscript "s" with two dots below, curved crossbar of "H", "opkinson", and the long horizontal return underline beneath the name.

In tyler-crop, the "F" is fainter and the long return underline slopes downward at a steeper angle toward the right.

40 John Hart

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the tall curving "J" enclosing the left side of "ohn", the double-stemmed "H" of "Hart", and the looped underline sweeping left from the final "t".

In tyler-crop, the top of the "J" is flatter and more open on the left, and the letters "ar" in "Hart" are slightly more cramped.

41 Abra Clark

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the pointed "A", "bra", "Clark", and the large dramatic figure-eight oval flourish sweeping beneath the entire name from the base of "C" (completely unobstructed at the bottom and right in huntington-crop).

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the angular cursive, the three large capital "C"s (with deep lower loops on the second and third "C"), the long "f" in "of", and the crossed "ll"s and terminal flourish of "Carrollton".

In tyler-crop, the strokes are noticeably lighter and thinner, especially across "Charles" and the final "ton".

45 Samuel Chase

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Matches the slanted "S", "amuel", and bold "Chase" with the large lower loop of "C" and small right-hand hook on "e" of binns-crop (in huntington-crop, the lower loop of "C" is unobstructed by Wm Paca below and "amuel" is slightly lighter).

In tyler-crop, the "S" of "Samuel" is very faint and the lower loop of "C" intersects the "P" of Wm Paca.

46 George Wythe

Closer to binns-crop

52 Carter Braxton

Closer to binns-crop

(Exact match)

Exact match in the tall looped "C", "arter", double-looped "B", and "raxton", ending cleanly at the final "n" with no trailing flourish.

53 Roger Sherman

Closer to binns-crop in lettering; tyler-crop in terminal hook

(Similar with unobstructed terminal hook)

Matches the bold, steady letterforms of "Roger Sherman" in binns-crop, but in huntington-crop the terminal stroke after the final "n" extends further right and curves downward into a bold, shaded hook (which runs straight into the Maryland border medallion in binns-crop).

Shares the complete downward-turning terminal hook at the right end of "Sherman" with tyler-crop, while maintaining crisper, more uniform stroke edges across the letters like binns-crop.

54 Samel Huntington

Closer to binns-crop

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the small neat "Sam", superscript "el", the looped crossbar of "H", and "untington" with its long first-"g" descender.

(Near-exact match)

Near-exact match in the large oval "O", tall "l", "iver", multi-peaked "W", tall "l", and "cott" with its long "tt" crossbar (unobstructed along the bottom edge since Matthew Thornton is not placed beneath it in huntington-crop).

In tyler-crop, the downstrokes of "O" and "W" are heavier and darker, and the base of "Wolcott" intersects Matthew Thornton below.
