Gemini For Museums: Agentic Gemini Locates Another Copy Of The Kleinschmidt Engraving

In our initial investigations of an exceptionally rare laid tissue paper Kleinschmidt copy of Audran's engraving of Le Brun's Château de Sceaux painting, Gemini was able to locate just one single other copy. To see if Gemini could turn up additional copies, we asked agentic Gemini to continue its research, tracking down engravings of Le Brun's Château de Sceaux cupola, attributed to Audran, Kleinschmidt or unattributed and assess whether they were the 5-sheet full-size engravings, rather than the later single-sheet miniature copies. After considerable research and visually examining reams of potential matches, Gemini was able to turn up a single additional copy, on thick laid paper, in a collector's scrapbook. One of the great challenges is that surviving copies of service engravings like this are most likely to be found bound in scrapbooks or filed away with other "assorted" Old Master engravings, detached from attribution information that could help identify them. In this case, the institution had not only identified and itemized the engraving in the collection record, it had scanned the images so Gemini was able to visually confirm they were the correct engraving. As more institutions scan their prints, it will be increasingly possible to identify isolates like this in unexpected places and to trace down previously unknown copies of rare works. Once again, the power of Gemini to pour over hundreds upon hundreds of search results to identify a second copy.
