Perhaps no iconic image better defines television news coverage of Covid-19 than the bookcase backdrop. As news channels interview their guests remotely from home rather than in the studio, it seems every interviewee has managed to find a bookcase somewhere in their house to use as a backdrop behind them while speaking. Interestingly, MSNBC leads this trend by a longshot. Since the start of the data on Apr. 3, MSNBC has featured bookcases somewhere in the onscreen imagery for almost 56 hours of airtime, while Fox News has featured them for 13.7 hours and CNN for 13.5 hours.
